It's a 26-litre backpack for done-in-a-day adventures, whether hiking, hill walking or rambling at the weekend with friends and family. As someone who has had more than a few odd glances for lugging around a mammoth pack, this makes a welcome change.

This is a 26 litre unisex day pack, part of Osprey’s 2018 range that also includes an 18 litre version. Our incredibly ventilated Airspeed back panel means you won't have to deal with the discomfort of hoisting a sweaty pack onto your back. The sternum straps helps a bit and can be adjusted up and down which is particularly useful for women, it also has an emergenvy whistle on the buckle.

This tensioned trampoline-type mesh has been used for a number of years by manufacturers such as Dueter and Gregory and in the case of the Hikelite it really keeps the pack a long way from your body, preventing much of the sweaty back experienced with closer-fitting packs.The recent extended spell of dry weather has kept me from testing this aspect of the pack, but the cover gives good coverage of the pack and should perform as well as the other rain covers on Osprey’s packs. The shoulder straps are broad, soft and well-enough cushioned to not dig into soft bust tissue, and the shape neatly sits outside the breasts rather than across. My usual water flask kept falling out until I devised a way of attaching it to the top straps of the bag to keep it in place. However for less windy conditions the rain cover does keep the pack and contents dry and I find the cover useful as something to pull out and sit on when its not being used as a rain cover.
