About this deal

Although there was a bit too much plastic packaging and polystyrene for our liking, initial impressions were good. For the full-size rice cookers, we looked to see how each cooker could handle different types of rice. It has a removable inner lid, which allows you to wash from every crevice the starchy film that accumulates during cooking.

We offer a high quality and accessible small kitchen appliances to help you create endless recipes from healthy meals to guilty pleasures, fitting many lifestyles. We were excited to test the Tiger JBV-A10U because it’s one of the cheapest cookers that still offer fuzzy-logic controls. It was very fast, but the result was gummy, difficult to fluff—even with the rice paddle—and stuck to the stainless-steel pot (the only pot insert that held on to rice).

Though using one is rarely faster than cooking rice in a pot over the stove—stovetop-cooking white rice takes around 18 minutes, compared with at least 30 minutes in a cooker—the results are usually worth the wait. In previous tests, the Neuro Fuzzy was the only cooker that still made decent rice with separate, firm grains when we added almost twice the needed amount of water, likely due to its advanced fuzzy-logic chip. It's one of the most expensive cookers on our test, but is an investment in its quality and versatility – it will replace several machines in the kitchen, making cooking and time far more efficient. As with all rice cookers, one of the great pleasures of using the Zojirushi Induction Rice Cooker was the ability to set it and forget it.

Excellent for people like me who get overwhelmed easily with too many instructions, buttons and functions. Basic rice cookers are cheaper and produce good results, particularly if you tend to cook the same type of rice. For our sushi and jasmine rice tests, we measured using a Japanese rice cooker cup (included with every machine), which is actually around ¾ cup, or 6 ounces, in US measurements. With many functions in one machine, it may at first seem complicated, but this tends to get easier with use. Of our three picks, we think this lid is the easiest to remove and put back on, with a simple pull tab design.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

The Panasonic is another simple model, the one that food photographer Neal Santos has also used for a decade — both personally and at his Philly-based Filipino pop-up, Lalo (which unfortunately closed due to the pandemic). We decided to replace the model as our budget recommendation after long-term testing revealed an issue where the timer would freeze but the machine would continue to cook until manually stopped. In addition, it sports modes for delayed cooking and brown rice—though our brown rice came out a little underdone. It’s important to keep in mind that these differences are very small, and this rice cooker also comes with several settings to adjust texture and consistency, which we found quite effective useful for making firmer grains over the course of six more months of testing.
