The series had two runs: the original (1978 to 1980, based directly on Herriot's books) was for three series; the second (1988 to 1990, filmed with original scripts) for four.

Superb performance by the cast of the new updated series, The first show in 1978-1990 was ok, but it didn’t get the characters right as described by the books, Siegfried was too old, and Tristan, the first Helen, and James were not on the mark. Those familiar with the earlier series (not forgetting two even earlier feature films) will find the new one has quite a lot of changes : additional characters and invented scenes and rather more in the way of humour. Sinclair's real-life behaviour was much more eccentric (he once discharged a shotgun during a dinner party to let his guests know it was time to leave)".The Herriot novels were written in an episodic style, with each chapter generally containing a short story within the ongoing narrative of Herriot's life. Straight off the bat with our on-set vet adviser Andy Barrett, we were up close and personal with horses, sheep, kind of going through the procedures and things that we would be doing.

It's fantastic to see my old favorites with new interviews added; I am so grateful to PBS for the chance to see it all again. I have seen the series which is absolutely great and a perfect remake of one of the best and most enjoyable series of the 1970's. I always believe an author’s book is the best source and a truthful and original authority so I disliked the departure from the book and believe that the story about James and Helen’s relationship (which is endearing, sweet, and very romantic) was sadly and absolutely overlooked.
