About this deal

A trailer has debuted for the feature adaptation of Alan Bennett’s play Allelujah which will come to cinema screens in March of 2023. An exhausted, enraged Valentine leaves the hospital and breaks the fourth wall with an impassioned monologue in defence of the NHS. The film is constantly compromised by its attempts to barb its bouquets of community cutesiness with polemical punches. sex There are occasional sex references and innuendo, including to promiscuity, foot fetishes, and very discreet references implying a man may have been a sex worker. Valentine deduces that Alma has been poisoning the most frail residents by lacing their night-time cups of warm milk with morphine.

While the juxtaposition of the twist and the saccharine goings-on in the rest of the film is shocking, it also makes the lead-up to the concluding thesis feel toothless and non-committal in comparison, imbuing it with something of an identity crisis that compromises the effectiveness of its noble message. For the most part, it’s a heartwarming piece about the indomitable human spirit and the beauty of old age, criticising the prioritisation of profit over people and celebrating the efforts of the NHS in the face of a government that works against their best interests and the interests of those in its care. In October 2021, it was announced that Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi, Jennifer Saunders, Bally Gill, Russell Tovey, and David Bradley had joined the cast of the film, [5] and principal photography began later that month. Allelujah had its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival on 11 September 2022, and was released in the United Kingdom on 17 March 2023, by Warner Bros. Allelujah is the first film to be adapted from one of Bennett's works since 2015's The Lady in the Van, which starred Maggie Smith and was based on Bennett's memoir.

The ostensible purpose and meaning of the film is of course to proclaim the value of the NHS, although you might argue that this faith is slightly deflected or undermined by the big narrative reveal – inspired by well-attested real life cases. threat and horror It is implied a member of the medical staff has intentionally caused the deaths of a number of patients. She said: "Sir John Major is not alone in his concerns that the latest series of The Crown will present an inaccurate and hurtful account of history. On paper, Allelujah sounds like — and has been very much marketed as — a ‘Clap For Carers’-esque proud paean to the NHS, housed within an ultimately crowd pleasing comedy-drama.

Jennifer Saunders, Bally Gill, Russell Tovey, David Bradley, Derek Jacobi, and Judi Dench are among the cast of the film, which is directed by Richard Eyre. The place is run under the benignly imperious hand of "Sister Gilpin" (Jennifer Saunders) with Bally Gill's "Dr. The ostensible purpose and meaning of the film is of course to proclaim the value of the NHS’ … Jennifer Saunders in Allelujah. When the geriatric ward in a small Yorkshire hospital is threatened with closure, the hospital decides to fight back by galvanizing the local community: they invite a news crew to film their preparations for a concert in honour of the hospital’s most distinguished nurse.

Judi Dench, Jennifer Saunders, Bally Gill, Russell Tovey and more to star in Alan Bennett's Allelujah film".The star cast of Allelujah are : Jennifer Saunders, Lorraine Ashbourne, Russell Tovey, David Bradley, Nicholas Burns, Derek Jacobi, Vincent Franklin, Gerard Horan, Jeffery Kissoon, Julia McKenzie, Arian Nik, Amanda Root and Ross Tomlinson. Eyre’s all-star cast may shine in Allelujah, but even Dame Judi Dench can’t save a film whose third act so spectacularly nosedives into “Batshit-Craziest Story Choices Ever Put On Film Hall Of Fame” territory. Suffice to say, however, such is the brain-frazzling, good faith-undoing, self-sabotaging severity of the left-turn this film takes, that when all’s said and done, words will likely fail you anyway. The next morning, Andy arrives at the Beth with a pack of cigarettes that Joe had requested he get, but finds Joe dead in his bed. The film stars Jennifer Saunders, Bally Gill, Russell Tovey, David Bradley, Derek Jacobi, and Judi Dench.

She is found dead the next morning, and the Beth is threatened with legal action by her daughter and son-in-law, who were due to inherit her home only three months later. When news of the closure of a small hospital's geriatric ward begins to reach the community, the hospital invites a local news crew to document their planning of a concert in honor of the hospital's most celebrated nurse. Perhaps the thought of a veteran Brit character-actor lineup in a care setting is a little mawkish, and I incidentally still have grim memories of Dustin Hoffman’s unsufferably patronising 2012 film Quartet with Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Pauline Collins and Michael Gambon.

The film was released on 17 March 2023 by Pathé in France and Switzerland and in the United Kingdom through Warner Bros. Jam-packed with jokes about bedpans and the indignities of ageing, Eyre’s film lacks the needling sharpness of something like Jack Thorne’s scathing COVID drama Help, tip-toeing around the specifics of the NHS’ current crises until a powerful yet totally out-of-place pandemic set coda. Bally Gill plays the genuinely caring Dr Valentine and Jennifer Saunders is the formidable, no-nonsense ward sister Gilpin who runs a tight ship. The imposition of a TV crew, brought in to show the daily workings of The Beth, leads to a slew of narratively obfuscatory, faux to-camera bits that feel out of place and alienating.
