About this deal

You won’t find anyone who hates it, but I don’t think you’ll find anyone that has a nosegasm after smelling it.

Mania is like one of those obscure, quaint little restaurants, that don't seem to offer much on the outside and only you and a selective few know about it. The opening is all about soft citruses rounded by saffron, with mandarin and tangerine coming to the fore.

The base is created of deep amber, a mysterious substance that transforms from organic liquid into hard crystals. I get the impression that it's really only there to make sure that the cedar and saffron persist, and it joins those two in a great unison. I would say it's good any time, any season but I'm biased living in NM where even shorts are often good any season. It made me wonder if Cavallier had a magic touch for creating challenging and polarizing perfumes–a good thing in my book. I can’t speak for the new reformulation, but I can say that if they kept the original smell you’ll be happy with this one.

This fragrance holds the Armani signature that takes me back to the mid-late 1990s, maybe it's the amber note that attains this mawkishness. The time I started to wear it, women complimented me because of it; however, the fragrance didn't last long. Then you got a softer round two with stuff like Armani Mania and Versace Jeans Couture Man (2002), both which lean more into clean citrus, fresh musks, amber, and rounded subtle spices like saffron and cardamom than heavy woods or pepper. I was thinking about Le Feu d’Issey when I was first testing it, and now each time I wear it, I see more resemblance.

Francis Kurkdjian said one time that this was his favorite creation for the designer/mainstream market. About that; ol Kurkdjian said in an interview once that this was his favorite designer he'd ever done at the time, which really didn't hurt its legacy now that he's celebrated himself. It’s the most rounder, sensual, with a buttery texture from the patchouli that it’s gorgeous to smell throught the day. It probably would have been a very popular fragrance, but: it goes to a skin scent very quickly, and it is a bit too synthetic smelling and also alcohol. It doesn't strike me as being especially unique or individual, and went on smelling somewhat mass market and uninteresting. In the opening I get a sweet hit of what I can best describe as fresh lime and vodka with a tad of aldehydes. Avoid the clown show and get a decant if you must know why this is or was Kurkdjian's one-time favorite, before making a really expensive mistake on a full bottle. You don't have to worry about too many people wearing this frag (well at least where i'm from it's not a concern).
