Maps is the new album from NYC rapper billy woods and LA producer Kenny Segal, their first full collaboration since 2019’s Hiding Places.Fat Possum is partnering with Backwoodz Studioz to provide global marketing and distribution resources. Delivered through the haze of an irregular sleep schedule, the songs detail the alienation of spending weeks away from home, constantly shuttling between unfamiliar locations and occasionally having unpleasant incidents with authority figures or venue workers. Danny Brown provides a lengthy, exuberant guest verse during the warped, noisy "Year Zero," bursting in fits of laughter by the end.

Tracks like the intro "Kenwood Speakers" and wobbly, Selected Ambient Works Volume II-sampling "Babylon by Bus" describe existence in corporate America and traveling through soon-to-be-gentrified areas. In the years since Woods has had an exceptional run of releases including a 2020 collaboration with Moor Mother and two albums under the Armand Hammer moniker.Weaving between poignant memoir, deadpan humor, and incandescent bursts of surrealism, Maps cements both artists' place amongst the best of their time. The Maps cassette is a clever flip of the airline motif of Maps by Ashes57; it includes an orange shell with white imprint and a beautiful 8-panel fold-out J-card. Don't want to be too cynical, but given what billy woods LPs resell for, has some opportunist in the supply chain decided to "lose" these records and sell them on discogs instead? Just wanted to mention that my copy was super staticky right out of the shrink and when I played it there was a lot of crackle…BUT I cleaned the disc just in case and set my counterweight to administer slightly less pressure on the disc and now the record plays and sounds great. Woods and Segal have made the mistake of making the stereotypical backpacker record which means that the record is easy to sleep on because it's too tranquil.
