About this deal

At the outset, the author urges the reader to ‘be patient with yourself’, ‘open your heart to the possibility of real change in your life’ and ‘don't consume this book but reflect your way through it’. In my own life and the lives of those I’ve counseled one of the most common questions is “how do I grow? It’s then, as you give up on yourself and throw your hands up in the air, that your heart is most fertile for the supernaturalizing power of the Holy Spirit” (167). Głębiej” przede wszystkim również zaserwuje odpowiedzi na pytania, które się ich nie doczekały w „Tunelach”.

In this book, Deeper: Real Change for Real Sinners, Dane Ortlund points believers to Christ, making the case that sanctification does not happen by doing more or becoming better, but by going deeper into the wondrous gospel truths that washed over them when they were first united to him. Ortund's teaching recognizes who we are before a Holy God and reminds us that it is not a fast walk to arrive. There are larger and more in-depth works on the subject of sanctification, but Ortlund's Deeper: Real Change for Sinners lays the ground work that every Christian should know, believe, and live out. Roderick followed Tunnels with further books in the series, Deeper, Freefall, Closer, Spiral and, finally, Terminal in 2013. The Styx also planning to release a plague to get rid of all the Topsoiler population and regain control their promised Earth. It was good for people like me, who have been following Jesus for many years, and I imagine it will be good for those just starting out. Indeed, his definition of mortification is one I am not sure John Owen would recognize: “There is no special technique to mortifying sin. Dane Ortlund knocks it out of the park again with this master work on the Christian life and Sanctification. Importantly, Ortlund does not suggest that such experience is normative, nor does he indicate that it is necessary. looking at Jesus Christ… sin loses its appeal as we allow ourselves to be re-enchanted time and again with the unsurpassable beauty of Jesus.

Ortlund’s illustration of inhaling the Word and exhaling prayers has been transformative in my view of reading the Bible. All these images share one thing in common: they focus on the entire process and goal of spiritual transformation. Ortlund builds on the wonderful truths from his first book, Gentle and Lowly, to teach us true change comes from knowing the Saviour whose love for us never wavers—even in our worst failures.

This lovely, easy-to-read primer by Dane Ortlund grounds our discipleship in the glowing center of Christianity—our Lord Jesus.

If we are trying to grow by merely looking more godly to others but are not changing our heart towards our sin, we have it backwards.

I received an ecopy of Deeper from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review, but all opinions are my own. Mother being torn believing her son went murderous (nice idea but I hated her reaction) and a Friend getting full of the troubles his friend put him through. She is honest about the struggles of finding time for the Scriptures but ambitious about the delight we can discover there. But a lone explorer, the linguist Ali von Schade, learns that a far greater menace lies in the unexplored heart of the planet.
