About this deal

Send your architects and explorers to create wonders from your territory that will outlive all of us. Continuing with the battle system, each of the 3 basic unit types (aircraft are not really a "basic" unit type) has a unit type which it defeats and a unit type that it is weak to in a rock-paper-scissors system. These three cards are played one at a time, and each time a card is played the results of that skirmish are immediately determined. Each city grants a trade card to the owner, one of eleven commodities, such as iron, salt and grain. There’s a surprisingly detailed city-building aspect, too; the buildings you construct in a city affects its abilities, such as requiring a port for fishing or a market to build more advanced military troops (when playing with the original game’s expansion, bundled in the recent Monumental Edition by default). Gains from trade are in turn used to purchase civilization cards, such as agriculture, coinage, philosophy and medicine, which grant special abilities and give bonuses toward future civilization card purchases. Clash of Cultures balances the accessibility and elegance of A New Dawn with the more traditional gameplay of original Sid Meier’s Civilization. These changes made combat much more complex, and luck was reduced as every card has the same total points. This usually resulted in "you trade me your iron and I'll give you 1/3 of the extra gold it'll give me" etc. In fact, you're allowed to trade anything for anything and it doesn't have to be fair, as long as both parties agree to the deal. The pieces are very nicely sculpted and generally easy to differentiate, except for the cavalry - the ancient, medieval and industrial cavalry all look rather similar and at a glance are hard to tell apart. Instead, the objective is to gain a level of overall advancement involving cultural, economic and political factors so that conflicts arise due to rivalry and land shortage rather than a desire to simply eliminate other players. Each player takes control of a nation with the goal of building the most advanced society in the known world.

Unsurprisingly, those two players dominated most of the game because of their wealth, and it was entirely due to luck, not to any particular good strategy on their part. Unlike the previous expansion, the player limit isn't raised: the game remains a 2-4 player game (or 2-5 players if both expansions are in play).

Fantasy Flight is not known for their amazing boxes or inserts and honestly is the one biggest thing they need to improve about their games.

It doesn’t take up all that much space and all that’s on the board are your little city minis and the little control tokens that are used to show what land you have under your control. Our 4-player game using the advanced rules took *eight* hours to play through, making it a game that you can't just whip out for a quick evenings bash. Sid Meiers Civilisation: The Board Game is a new boardgame from Eagle Games, and is based on the Computer Game of the same name (which, interestingly enough, was originally based on another boardgame).
