About this deal

Across the chapters, Hartmann backs his assertions up with evidence, offers non-drug methods and practices to help hunters (as well as those who live alongside them) to welcome their differences, hone their skills, cultivate their creativity, and find success in their lives. He reveals how Hunters make excellent entrepreneurs, sharing ADHD success stories from Fortune 500 CEOs, inventors, small business owners, and his own hands-on experience in launching new businesses. But if ADHD is a genetic disease or an abnormality, it’s a popular one, possibly afflicting as many as 25 million individuals in the United States. I think this would be a good second or third book if you’ve just started your adhd learning journey. The relaxing average person would fall at the middle or in the 5 to 7 inch area, while the relaxed Hunter would be found in the 7 to 8 inch area and the relaxed Farmer in the 4 to 5 inch area.

About the time I got diagnosed with ADHD, Thom Hartmann produced the first edition of ADHD: Hunters in a Farmer’s World. constantly alert to dangers and possible prey (others see that as distracted) ready to sprint at a moments notice; flight or flight always switched on, just as a Hunter-Gather (HG) would be. What we tell an ADHD child can have a very damaging effect if they are punished for the way they are.I would say that if everyone in the world were open to the idea that there is not just one type of person and that the standard set by mankind is purely subjective and irrational, the world would look considerably more beautiful. Unfortunately many of the success stories she mentions were during the 18th and 19th century back when their was less technological automation and more vocational for ADHD folk. Often highly creative and single-minded in pursuit of a self-chosen goal, those with ADHD symptoms possess a unique mental skill set that would have allowed them to thrive in a hunter-gatherer society. However, the Hunter skill set offers many opportunities for success in today’s Farmer society–if you learn how to embrace your ADHD traits instead of fighting against them.

This society has become so lazy we would rather slap a label on a kid, medicate them into zombies and not have to parent. In the areas that were lush with plant and animal life and had a low human population density, hunters and gatherers predominated. It's had some negative impacts on my life, and while I have my own set of coping strategies, I believe in expanding my options whenever possible, especially when it comes to my work life, where my ADHD has proven to occasionally be a real problem. In other words, an individual with the ADHD collection of characteristics would make an extraordinarily good hunter.I, however, am not much of an entrepreneur and was mostly looking for ways to prosper in the workplace, as it's phrased in the description. Genetic variants (such as the DRD4 7R allele, as well as others on DRD4 and DRD2) conferring susceptibility to ADHD are very frequent—implying that the trait had provided selective advantage in the past. We have resources; we have 504 plans and IEPs (in the US anyway); we have ways of helping kids reach their potential without making them feel like shit. People with this type of brain hyperfocus on one area much more than other people are able to do, at the cost of all the other things outside of that. The money from pharmaceutical companies continues to suggest that ADHD is a failure of genetics or neurochemistry, but by learning that you have a gene of the Hunter and that it was an advantage to the Hunter, you may become open to a positive side of ADHD.

Ko further states that the decreased need for 'hyperfocus' was building the conditions favourable for human language. At one point the author asserts that it is teachers, not doctors, that insist on medicating students. I would not, however, give it to a teen with ADD or ADHD, especially if that teen requires short-term or long-term medication to assist with attention and/or the development of executive skills.
