Broccoli and Harry Saltzman standing him in good stead, as he quipped “What better way for a potential Bond than to meet the producers. This book is well-illustrated with various photos and poster reproductions that can help one to decide whether a particular title if worth viewing today, now that so many of these films have made their way to DVD.

We get a white Lotus Esprit that converts to a submarine, and of course we get Caroline Munro as Naomi who gets to chase after Bond in a gun heavy helicopter. In 1964, guest starred as James Bond in a TV sketch opposite comedy star Millicent Martin on her eponymous show. The British tradition of ‘saucy postcard’ humour is perhaps best exemplified by the long running Carry On movies. In the first newsletter, I mentioned I’ve had one state secret in my life, which I immediately blurted to my mother. However, I found myself reading the ones that had the sauciest titles, and wishing there was more history.

Keeping the British End Up covers those mostly unloved 'dirty postcard' type films that the dirty mac brigade would go to see in Sullivan's and Raymond's Soho fleapits. A self-confessed coward, Moore was bemused by his image as some kind of hero, “Ah, well that’s where the acting comes in you see! These sexy, light-hearted romps smashed box office records, playing to packed houses up and down the UK, and across the world. Sir Roger, as he became in 2003, continued to be an ambassador for the Bond films and encapsulated their appeal in 2012: “For 50 years it’s gone on and people go back because it’s an old friend. It is with great sadness that the global James Bond fan community has learned of the death of Sir Roger Moore at his home in Switzerland at the age of 89. The author does a great job of summing up the film, and includes a bit about the production and actors involved, as well as an overview of the social evolution of "naughty" films in the UK. In all honesty, I had a moment of wondering early in the week why there were so many pictures of the Queen plastered on every surface (or projected onto Stonehenge) because I was so looking forward to my sister Rosie’s Van Party that I totally forgot it was the Jubilee at all. Sheridan compiles the first definitive filmography of the genre, and coaxes facts from previously reclusive and reluctant interviewees. The situation becomes a bit ridiculous when you consider that Fleming himself was almost in breach of copyright, as he included Blofeld in three other novels- all without McClory’s permission! As you might know, he had a lot to do with the screen treatment of Thunderball, and had teamed up with Saltzman and Broccoli in 1965 on the understanding that he wouldn’t launch a rival production. But Broccoli’s gamble had paid off- the film was a huge critical and commercial hit and arguably gave Roger Moore his greatest Bond film.

They were kinda more risque Carry On films with a bit of added raunch and nudity filled with what looked like, page 3 girls or Mayfair centrespreads [rather than Babs Windsor or Elke Sommer]. Sean could sit at a table with a girl at a nightclub and either lean across and kiss her or stick a knife in her under the table and then say, 'Excuse me waiter, I have nothing to cut my meat with. With titles like "Confession's Of A Window Cleaner", "Can You Keep It Up For A Week", "I'm Not Feeling Myself Tonight" and alike, this was the state of the British movie industry in the 70's and was all that was keeping it alive.

There are photo gallery sessions, film festivals, movie premieres, publicity trips to the major foreign film markets.

The British censors were a far cry from American censors, and would allow nudity, but only if it was considered necessary (and educational) to the story. Whereas Roger could kiss the girl, if he stuck a knife in her it would look nasty because Roger looks like a nice guy. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Also there does seem to be a lot more cheeky innuendo than previously and Caroline Munro does look like she’s wandered in from a far seedier production.
