About this deal

From the descriptions of the Jamaica Coffee House to the candle lit theatre chandeliers Georgian London is vividly brought to life.

This book is written in the first person and uses a chatty form of language throughout the whole book. The Lizzie and Belle Mysteries does what, in my view, great historical fiction should do- it tells a cracking story from the view of someone you might not find in the history books. Despite slavery being abolished, unfortunately black people were still being captured and sent overseas as slaves and I found this part of the story eye-opening but interesting to learn about as it is not an aspect in our history that I am familiar with.I absolutely flew through this brilliant new detective series, reading both the physical book and listening to the audiobook. They went to Garrick, who was the Director of the play: he felt the dropping of the chandelier was an accident and the show should go on. In the end, the characters get on extremely well together and both characters were needed in the process. I can’t be the only one who’s been yearning for something to fill the Murder Most Unladylike/Sinclair Mysteries hole in my reading heart since those series came to an end, so I know I won’t be the only one latching. Can Lizzie and Belle get to the bottom of what is going on in the theatrical setting of the era, and protect Lizzie’s father; or in fact can they even protect themselves.

My favourite character was Dido Belle because she is daring, and wanted to go on with the investigation despite it being dangerous. I highly recommend this book to young readers as the story is easy to read with its chain of events that stirs up curiosity in the reader until its end.But when they catch each other’s eyes at the theatre one night, each is delighted to see another Black girl her own age. She is passionate about storytelling to give voice to those rarely heard and walks the city to uncover its secrets. I would definitely recommend this book to others as the mystery kept me coming back and the end didn’t disappoint! I find this quite interesting as back then there was a lot of racism and the fact that he is on stage is amazing! Lizzie’s father is almost killed and the girls feel it is their duty to find out who tried to kill him.
