An interactive encyclopedia of monsters divided into sections and complete with "specimens", samples, sketches, and illustrations on every page.

Best of all, Monsterology closes with a message on proper conduct for aspiring monsterologists and the importance of conservation. Helen Ward trained as an illustrator at Brighton School of Art, under the direction of well-known children's illustrators such as Raymond Briggs, Justin Todd, Chris McEwan and John Vernon Lord. It has plenty of beautiful watercolor and ink illustrations and specimens for the reader to touch are attached on nearly every page.

In 1985, her final year at Brighton, Helen was awarded the first Walker Prize for Children's Illustration. I would give "Monsterology The Complete Book of Monstrous Beasts" by Ernest Drake a 4-star review because, 1; I really like the illustrations and the information 2; I like how the author covers various creatures 3; I honestly forgot that these creatures are fictional while reading which I loved but 4; I really wish that is was longer and there were more information in this book.

They flash through the air and slither through the seas, crawl through the earth and lurk in the woods. Review by my granson as the book is his:Following on from the Dragonology set of merchandise this is in the same ilk. I will (most likely) not be rating all of the "ology" books I will be reading, because that would end up being a lot of ratings lol (especially since I also checked some out from the library). There is a darkness in the shading of the portraits and expression of the characters that indicates “something of the night” about them.Ernest Drake was determined to bring the subject of dragons under the burgeoning umbrella of the nineteenth-century natural sciences. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The book was part textbook style, talking about the creatures lives, diets, health and more, and part travel guide where the monsterologist discusses his travels looking for these monsters. The purple, man-eating, burrowing giant worm known as the Mongolian death worm," for example, is fake according to Dr.

Monsterology caters cheerfully to its readers’ fascination with smelly feet, bad breath, and other problematic aspects of the human body that can make us seem, or feel, monstrous. The ardent student of nature soon learns that those creatures we name foul and terrible monsters are in truth the most fabulous beestes awaiting amaz’d discoverie. For those of us over a certain age, the word "ology" will forever conjure up the image of Maureen Lipman, playing the character of Beattie in the telephone ad, saying: "You got an ology? It's an exciting and innovative way of getting someone interested in the subject and I, for one, would have been totally absorbed by it as a boy.Dugald has now given up his editorial job to concentrate on writing full-time, especially more books with "ology" in the title. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Witty drawings inserted into the text reinforce the sense, however, that this is a book that aims to amuse rather than frighten. A companion to Dragonology, Monsterology is a study of the many supposedly mythical beasts that inhabit our world. To a younger generation, however, I imagine that "ology" will instantly bring to mind Dugald Steer's series of extraordinary books. It's a fun book on a fun subject, but in a series where production values are extremely high, it's certainly not one of the finest. Dugald Steer was born in 1965 and grew up in Surrey, where his love of books and reading led him to study English Literature and Philosophy at Bristol.

Monsterology The Complete Book of Monstrous Beasts" by Ernest Drake is, a fictional children's book about about fictional monsters including unicorns, griffins, the kraken, etc. This was the book that first brought creatures of mythology into my life, and the descriptions and stories about said creatures were extraordinarily useful for bringing the illustrations to life. The result is a book designed to tickle the imagination, complete with fold-out maps, envelopes, and other tangible items - such as unicorn hair, sea serpent skin, and spell-casting paper - lending an authentic feel to a book of imagined creatures.
