About this deal

The below video score and related critique of things here are based solely upon my viewing of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray presentation of Pacific Rim. This is a film where the VFX work varies from photo-real to something more akin to sytlized animé, and all of that holds up here.

Noise/Artifacts: There wasn’t a single speck of noise or forbidding artifact to be seen in the print. Then check the image of Mako, how her hair and costume have these dark black blobs of nothing peppered throughout whereas the UHD's grade resolves her hair from root to tip, as they say in the adverts.Honoring The Kaiju Tradition (HD, 4:30) – Here we get a tour of the film’s Kaiju lineup as created by the mind of del Toro. You can view all 13 individually, or you can select the Pan Pacific logo and watch them all fluidly. I've yet to get a 4K blu ray player, and LG hasn't updated the YouTube app for my TV so I can't enjoy the HDR benefit from the HDR channel vids. resolution, the freshly-minted transfer, upscaled from a 2K digital intermediate, arrives in the nick of time with razor-sharp definition in every scene. Look above Pentecost in that same shot, how posterised the darker regions above his head look in the SDR disc.

But despite this limitation, the image still looks very good because the movie utilized HDR well for eye-popping contrast, brightness, deep blacks and of course a wider potential color gamut with stronger saturation. The Jaeger program is being ended to focus strengths on building a massive wall surrounding the Pacific Rim.While it took a couple viewings for me to appreciate, I've come to unabashedly adore 'Pacific Rim' for all its geektastic monster action, thrilling set-pieces, and world-building beauty. If you're simply looking for a UHD Blu-ray demo disc that will test the strengths and weaknesses of your entire system, it also comes Highly Recommended. And, for all the problems with taking a leaf out of Michael Bay's playbook, one huge benefit is that the grand setpieces are almost always set in broad daylight, where you can finally revel in the immense scale of the action without scratching your head as to what exactly is going on. The problem with tone mapping this kind of 'fake' HDR content is that if the TV is clipping above a certain level of nits - which for actual 2400-nit content would likely just be the brightest of speculars, i.

Baby Kaiju Set Visit (HD, 3:07) – Here we get an all access visit to the Hong Kong set to witness firsthand what’s real and what’s digital. I was expecting a drawn out fiasco to get some resolution but instead found instant refund with this more than fair top seller.

Sure, I know that this is "4K Ultra HD Blu-ray" and not "Oh look the shadow detail is a bit better Geoffy Vision™ Boo-ray" so this endless circlejerk about "fake 4K" will continue apace, but as someone who's done the upgrade dance soooo many times over the last 25 years I'll take my improvements where I can get 'em, be they spatial/temporal resolution, compression, colour, black levels, contrast, dynamic range etc etc etc. Depth: Characters all feel living and breathing on my 4K television screen as they literally pop in three-dimension from the blurred out, depth of field backgrounds. Huge metal monsters battle huge organic monsters but so incredibly real that when the film ends you suddenly wonder "where did almost 2 hours go"? Watching it the first time, I couldn't help but think that this is the movie that ' Transformers' should have been. With fantastic special effects, tons of action, and a wildly loud sound effects, it's everything that a blockbuster should be.

Other atmospherics also echo and convincingly pan across the overheads with amusing effectiveness, but the best moments are when they are employed to give the Jaegers and Kaiju a better sense of size and perspective, flawlessly moving from the rear to front heights and into the screen or vice versa. It seems HDR/WCG can reveal weaknesses in some UHD movies, say 'Fury Road', where certain effects feel lighter and less immersed in the movie's world.
