About this deal

of helicopter rotors, the flapping of enormous pterodactyl-like wings—are seamless and transparent, shot through the soundstage with pinpoint precision. And you also can’t deny that the film has made obscene amounts of money, so it’s certain to trigger a ton of copycat 3D-fantasy epics, and possibly even its own sub-genre.

Editor’s Note: This review was written in 2010, before Fox had widely released the film on Blu-ray 3D format. Well even if the extended cut wasn’t enough reason to double-dip, Cameron has gone out of his way to present his film here with the best possible selection of extras – not one but two packed extras discs within the package. Avatar: Screenplay Written by James Cameron – Presumably, the final draft of the script, dated July 30, 2007. Fortunately, the Blu-ray box set offers all three versions of the movie, so viewers can choose which they feel like watching at any particular opportunity.Additionally, it looks like this release comes with a digital copy and packaging features a slipcover.

Some of these Featurettes are worth dipping into, but most will prefer to just watch the Documentary, and will be disappointed that this doesn’t offer anything massively new. Personally I still think that that he should have stuck with the original formatting – there’s a lot of wasted footage here at the top and bottom of the frame, which the Director never intended for you to actually see – but, alas, we are always at the mercy of the Director’s whims. Visually, the colors are accurate to the theatrical presentation, and range from muted to stunningly bold and vibrant. While I didn't test this myself, I would advise viewers who fall into those categories to try it out before assuming that the DTS option is appropriate for everyone's needs. The third part takes a closer look at the work done to bring the concept art to life, the effects, the real creations and the model-work, focussing on the two polar worlds – the military stuff and the tribal elements.Given that it’s reported that Cameron may add scenes for next BD version to create an extended cut, and that there will be substantial extras included, I think splitting the film over two BD-50s will really give the compression the chance to breathe even more than it does here. Even after all these years, the film's visual effects remain unparalleled, setting a standard that few have been able to match. This section of the second disc is quite expansive, split into numerous Effects Tests, some Screen Tests and various VFX Progressions. When all is said and done, I don't think that any of the additions to the Extended Cut improve the movie any. It is NOT perfect, however, despite the fact that the film is presented on a BD-50 with no other extras.

And none of them addresses the plot hole of what happened to all the other Avatars seen at the beginning of the film.I'm sure that fans of the movie will appreciate the opportunity to spend a little extra time on Pandora. The characters in Avatar are not just vessels for the story; they are richly developed, making it easy for the audience to connect with them emotionally. Its unparalleled CGI, compelling characters, and thought-provoking narrative make it a film that continues to stand the test of time. On the negative side, the cuts add little to the overall production, and fans will enjoy watching them once for curiosity value, but will probably stick with the original Theatrical Cut in the long run. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.
