Prior to reading this novel, I had no idea it contained a theme of religious fanaticism and when you couple that with the truth we finally get to know, it made sense but at the same time, it was very underwhelming. Although this isn’t really a “horror novel” as such, it certainly takes influence from them during a few moments and, like a classic 1980s splatterpunk horror novel, this isn’t a novel for the easily shocked.

If someone tried to kick her wall down, she tossed everything that came into her head into a melting pot, gave it a vigorous stir and slapped a ladleful of hotchpotch on the nearest plate. I realised something about myself whilst reading this, that concept of less is more, because there were so so many sex scenes in this that for me it took it away from the storyline and their connection, to the point that after a few sessions with these two I had to skip a few acts because if it wasn't these two it was always someone in the pipeline wanting her to satisfy their sexual needs, even if they had to steal what wasn't up for the taking. It is the weekend and as my public service announcement, if you haven't watched the series, The Sinner then you have missed out. Elli's story broke my heart, abused and manipulated since she was a child, her body and life always a tool at the mercy of men. let’s not pretend that there was ever any conversation or agreement or safe words or actions made or available that would even remotely be recognized to allow this trigger to even exist in this book.
