About this deal

Whitfield, another by Christopher Metress in 2002, and Mamie Till-Mobley's memoirs the next year all posed questions as to who was involved in the murder and cover-up. Anderson's Emmett Till: The Murder That Shocked the World and Propelled the Civil Rights Movement provides a full and detailed picture of the murder of Emmett Till and its legacy. Especially resonant today is the author's focus on obtaining voting rights for blacks in Southern states that denied those rights before the Till murder. This highly readable book is likely to remain the final account of the Till murder and trial and its impact in the United States and abroad.

The jury did not hear Bryant's testimony at the trial as the judge had ruled it inadmissible, but the court spectators heard. However, in his 2009 book, Till's cousin Simeon Wright, who was present, disputed the accounts of Huie and Jones. Now, half a century later, Carolyn offered up another truth, an unyielding truth about which her tragic counterpart, Mamie, was also adamant: “Nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him. Black life in America has endured as little more than a fragile truth in the hands of white aggressors. Daley and Illinois Governor William Stratton also became involved, urging Mississippi Governor White to see that justice was done. The next day, when a picture of him his mother had taken the previous Christmas showing them smiling together appeared in the Jackson Daily News and Vicksburg Evening Post, editorials and letters to the editor were printed expressing shame at the people who had caused Till's death.

Anderson further notes that many remarks prior to Till's kidnapping made by those involved indicate that it was his remarks to Bryant that angered his killers, rather than any alleged physical harassment. It's important to have people in power make a statement with these kinds of laws that the crimes that the laws address are not going to be accepted, they're not going to be tolerated,” Benson said. Parker and Benson said the book offers context for the sociopolitical environment of the time and place in which Till was killed. One juror voted twice to convict, but on the third discussion, voted with the rest of the jury to acquit. The day before the start of the trial, a young black man named Frank Young arrived to tell Howard he knew of two witnesses to the crime.
