About this deal

The dynamic range of this surround track feels like you’re climbing the highest peaks of Everest and want to shout it to the world. While one or two later series (with bigger budgets) of Game Of Thrones top season one for spectacle and story sophistication, there’s something about Season one’s rawness, unflinching brutality, and world-building cleverness that still makes it my personal favorite season to date. Height: Game of Thrones was one of the first television shows to employ Dolby Atmos on the Blu-ray format years ago when it re-released Seasons 1 and 2 with the collectable steelbooks and magnets within. Daenerys Targaryen and the continuance of her unswayable quest as she begins to experience some of the hardships of rule. DISCLAIMER: This 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray review was judged and graded using the following 4K certified Ultra HD Premium television set found here and player here.

The final seasons of the series were finished in 4K to begin with, while the earlier seasons were upsampled to create new 4K DIs. That HDR10 and Dolby Vision works wonders with these colors, bring them new life in a more realistic transfer this time around. Besides the reds and fiery moments the blue eyes of Sansa and the Whitewalkers in Season 7 are quite striking and rich too.If you’re a fan of the show and 4K Disc home media collector, then you’ll remember that the first season (full review HERE) and eighth season (full review HERE) of the show were previously released on the preferred format we’re here to talk about today. That said, while it sounds excellent for a seven-year-old TV show, maybe because of the original tracks they had to work with in putting the Atmos mix together, it’s not exactly a reference grade effort.

Despite it all though nothing ever gets lost in the translation of the mix here including the dialogue thanks to the discreteness of it all. The wider shots both practical and computer-generated are incredible from gigantic castles and thrones to small bursts of battles with big armies running in all directions. Low Frequency Extension: The LFE channel is always quite busy thanks to the sweeping score and drums employed throughout. Truth be told unless you’ve been living under a rock the last ten years or trapped in a basement in Cleveland (too soon?Fans who can take advantage of Dolby Vision will be especially pleased by its impact on that episode. The first three seasons were shot in 10-bit 4:4:4 at 1920x1080 resolution using then prototype ARRI Alexa cameras (save for a bit of footage in the first episode that was actually shot on 35 mm film, left over from HBO’s original failed pilot). The show features a variety of interior and exterior locations/sequences containing a host of recorded sounds/effects designed to replicate its environs. The 7th Season is a compelling and, at times shocking experience, that proved to be one of the series best ever. I find that its levels of gray, sepia tones and variants of blue/red benefit from UHD's wider color gamut, appearing warmer and pleasing to the eye.

For the most part, though, the picture quality of the Game Of Thrones Season One 4K Blu-ray release is good enough to give you all the excuse you need to start watching this epic show again from the start ahead of the final season hitting our screens later this year. So let’s take the slip cover off and as you can see from the one side angle it exposes the fact that there are a total of 9 different disc cases, which will look at momentarily in more detail. That encompasses all 8 seasons of the hit HBO show that plays across 73 episodes, which equates to roughly 75 hours. While it’s not the most aggressive HDR upgrade I’ve ever seen, it’s definitely one of the most effective and sensitive. Daylight exteriors look much more life like too - and again this enhancement is delivered sensitively enough to stop the image from looking unnaturally stretched or making dark foreground objects look like empty silhouettes.I have noticed that most of the discs I have had problems with over the years didn't have a mark on them. Also, the occasional exceptionally bright exterior, such as the sequence where Joffrey is bitten by Arya Stark’s direwolf, can look a touch strained, and/or suffer with some very slight color banding in skin tones. Comparing the Dolby Vision and HDR10 presentations for Game of Thrones, I found the HDR renderings to be very close.
