About this deal

After months of bombing raids in London, twelve-year-old Olive Bradshaw and her little brother Cliff are evacuated to the Devon coast. The author conveys the relationship between these two younger siblings beautifully; Olive’s love and care for her eight-year-old brother is palpable. The book was quite grabbing for me and I would definitely recommend this book to other people who like history like me.

Being an evacuee she has an understanding of the prejudice that can come from lack of understanding. She stumbles on discoveries that lead her on a daring mission to save others who are in terrible danger. The story was set in February 1941 at the beginning of the second World War in London and Devon, two very different cities. I enjoyed this book because it is set in the war and it gives you the feel of what it was like to be in it.I recommend ‘Letters from the Lighthouse‘ to any reader needing a really strong story that grips and holds your interest through every page. At first, Olive is unsure about Esther as she is different to the other children and comes across as cold and uninviting.

I haven't charted out my visits for the summer term, but I'm sure there are several in the south) and thanks so much for being so fantastic! I have even talked the head into a little revamp of the library so that we can display them properly! This book was truly eye opening and it has taught me a lot about the different lived experiences of WW2. I can really imagine living in the war from reading this book as the description can draw a picture in my mind.A beautifully written story about bravery, compassion, understanding, and having the strength to fight for what you believe in. I'm not sure if the history in the book was realistic as I think that Britain did allow refugees to come into the country in the second world war. Perennials PERENNIALS constant friends A selection of novels, memoirs and more by some of our favourite authors.

My personal view is that encouraging all children to find a love of books is key to their future well-being. To try and be helpful she becomes a postman and starts sending secret messages to her sister Suki who was lost in an air raid, but she finds a code which she is convinced relates to her but how far will she go for her sister?

My favourite character was Sukie because she really wants to help with this plan to save people, who live in other countries where the war is really bad. The descriptive passages are completely unlaboured, but take the reader to the time and place with ease and believability. I found it fascinating, although I’m not a native of Somerset I live here now and loved the combination of local history and magical imagination.
