About this deal

In the 1790s Goethe contributed to Friedrich von Schiller´s journal Die Horen, published Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, and continued his writings on the ideals of arts and literature in his own journal, Propyläen.

I have met with women whom I really think would like to be married to a Poem and to be given away by a Novel. Goethe was released from day-to-day governmental duties to concentrate on writing, although he was still general supervisor for arts and sciences, and director of the court theatres.

Also most of the letters were preludes or committed during adultery as most men and the women they corresponded with were married to other people or at least with other people and lot of them didn't even end up together. They added a nice touch by giving some background info on the relationship or which stadium of life the different letters were written in. Men like van Gogh, Mozart, and Beethoven, who famously penned, "Be calm, only by a calm consideration of our existence can we achieve our purpose to live together--Be calm--love me--today--yesterday--what tearful longings for you--you--you--my life--my all--farewell. The letters varies between one long letter or a couple of short ones, and most of them are dedicated to one specific woman, but others have several correspondences with several women. And of the letters, Wilde's were perhaps the most respectful of their subject (Twain's too, and the last letter in the book from the soldier who told his girlfriend she was free to have a life while he was at war).

My favorite letter was from John Keats, who (I learned from reading the book) died from consumption at the tender age of 26. The first entry is a letter of Pliny the Younger to his wife, which I had actually read in Latin with my Latin 3 class the day before I first picked this book up and looked at it. Wilde tried to fight back with a libel suit as Douglas was sullying his name in public, but it was to no avail.A Hungarian composer, conductor, and pianist, Franz Liszt was a child prodigy who began studying piano with his father at the age of 6. It's a lovely letter and all the more tragic for being the last thing he ever wrote - he was posted missing a month later and never found.

This union is love, true love,… a religion, which deifies the loved one, whose life comes from devotion and passion, and for whom the greatest sacrifices are the sweetest delights. His beloved Sonya bore him more than a dozen children over their many blissful and prosperous years together. His letters to Josephine offer a glimpse into his tender side, revealing a man deeply in love amidst the tumultuous backdrop of war and power struggles.

There were a few winning qualities: I found the little biographies before each letter interesting, though there was some wording I wish Doyle would've changed (i. There is nothing like crafting characters and capturing the voice of a story, bringing it to life on the pages. At the age of 9, he gave his first public performance and a year later went to Vienna, where he studied with Karl Czerny and Antonio Salieri. The marriage brought a new lightness and openness of voice to Browning's verse during the next 21 years, resulting in the great dramatic monologues of Men and Women in 1855 and the epic The Ring and the Book in 1867. Although he suffered a mental breakdown in his later years, he still went on to paint masterpieces like Starry Night and The Sower.

Plus fascinating biographies, and insights into the couples' relationships-how they got there, the obstacles they faced, and what happened next.He also wrote nonfiction, including reportage of the Russo-Japanese War and Mexican revolution, as well as "The Cruise of the Snark" (1911), an account of an eventful South Pacific sea voyage with his wife, Charmian, and a rather motley crew. When I originally bought this, I think I was expecting something different or maybe just excited to get the book from The sex and the City movie.
