The first two books were illustrated by manga artist Kozumi Shinozawa, while the remaining four were by Ryō Azumi. My only complaint would be that the book is “flipped” (or is it “not flipped”…) Traditionally, manga, even translated to English, is read right to left.

I've spent years trying to find something like this that is easy (even compelling) reading and represents a faithful account of what the Bible records instead of presenting 'nice' stories 'based upon' Biblical events. Each book in the series is initially written in Japanese by Christian Japanese artists, then translated to additional languages and published by regional religious publishers.

Comixology's Jason Thompson was less impressed, heavily criticizing the art of the book, referring to it as the "most basic kind of manga shorthand—awkward geometric faces with big eyes, big hair, exaggerated expressions" with "blandly attractive" main characters, "dorky caricatures" of old RPG characters used for the villains, and crudely drawn backgrounds. Who would have imagined these not-so-known, not-well liked, mostly secondary disciples to look this cute that you would like to collect them if they were collectible figures? However, whether people have read the Bible before or not, it’s a great aid for more visual learners and I can really see it being used in an ESL teaching ministry to reach asian overseas students. The authentic, cutting-edge art style is combined with fast-paced storytelling to deliver biblical truths to an ever-changing culture that is often a challenge to penetrate.Now that they themselves are disciples, they are to bring His Kingdom to every corner of the Earth, to every tribe, people and tongue. Additional comic bubbles within the illustrations give insight into the thoughts and reactions of the characters. His disciples refuse to believe it, and one even tells Him not to, which makes Jesus turn around and tell Peter “satan, get behind me!
