About this deal

After a huge microplastic storm separated her and her lover and killed countless people, all she knows is how to survive--and resources are depleting. Then, after years without human contact, Katie and Harry are terrified by the unwelcome arrival of another survivor. However, if you did like this and wanted something similar in theme, you may be interested in A Children's Bible.

Not Alone is a sharp exploration of environmental apocalypse—and a celebration of pure, boundless love that can survive anything. Or that she would not teach her child anything about how to survive in the new world apart from mask wearing and hand washing. The story unfolds with a mix of flashbacks that provide a few revealing plot twists that kept me interested in how it was going to work out until the very end.We learn a lot about who Katie is and her relationship to Jack and Harry before there is much momentum to the plot.

They’re almost never in significant danger or distress, so any high stakes scenes were low tension because I knew they’d get out of it with just a little scratch. It's been five years since most of the Earth’s population was killed by a “plastic dust storm,” a disaster that threw microplastics from the oceans straight into human lungs. In a world very close to our own, a mother and her young son desperately fend for themselves in the confinement of their one bedroom flat.

The story weaves through their journey, but also looks into Katie's past, so we get a glimpse of who the important people in her life really were, including Jack. The _ga cookie, installed by Google Analytics, calculates visitor, session and campaign data and also keeps track of site usage for the site's analytics report. Katie’s determination to keep him safe was so strong that protecting Harry ultimately fuels so many of her own fearful actions. The car driving, all those chapters, they were driving but then stuck almost driving off into the water?

He tells her of other survivors, especially in cities, and talks about getting a greenhouse working. They meet people both good and bad, but mostly the sadness comes from being inside the head of this traumatized woman who must keep going for the sake of her child. There is very little hope in this story to make you want to keep going with the characters but the arc of the main character was interesting. And I understand the comparison I do, in as much as there is an adult and a child traveling together in a post-apocalyptic world, and I hate to hold the example written by a woman up as the shining example of the saltine cracker of fucking apocalypse stories, but here you go. I really find it beyond belief that a landcruiser smashed into barricades, houses and regularly submerged and filled with old polluted fuel could make it past the M25. Now Katie must forage and hunt the few surviving animals for meat as she attempts to feed her little boy, to care for him as best she can.
