About this deal

If you’re not going to do lots of reading or research before you visit, then a guide is a necessity. If you found this guide to visiting Pompeii useful, you might like these other posts about places to visit in the Bay of Naples.

The present starts eerily to mirror the past as Cat must fight to protect her safety, and to forge a new path from the ashes of her old life… The ancient ruins of Pompeii are situated next to the modern town of Pompei (note the crafty dropped 'i' to distinguish between the two) in the southern Italian region of Campania. Pompeii... demolished in the world's most famous volcanic eruption in A.D. 79 killing thousands at the apex of the Roman Empire, ironically the people never knew Mount Vesuvius was this a volcano; understandable since the previous significant one occurred 1,800 years before, no town existed, and the name unknown to them because the word hadn't been invented yet, but soon would... lets say by borrowing from the Roman god of fire... Vulcan... Our story unfolds when a young despondent man of 27, a recent widower Marcus Attilius Primus arrives in the prosperous resort city, the kind that if you have money they like you, he has an important job here, as an aquarius the chief engineer of Aqua Augusta a huge aqueduct which supplies 250,000 inhabitants with life giving water around the Bay of Naples. His predecessor Exomnius vanished, where is he ?...Wasn't he from the island of Sicily in the Mount Etna area? This But I had to give the book 5 stars. It deserved it in my opinion. For despite its flaws, it had me at ave. The victims’ bodies decomposed where they’d died, leaving body-shaped spaces in the hardened ash. Almost 2000 years later, archaeologists were able to pour plaster into these spaces, revealing the last moments of the victims and creating Pompeii’s famous body casts.

Reviews

A courtesan in Rome. Playing for power. Haunted by her past. Her name is Amara. How will her fortunes fall? The only way to combat this type of tourism is common decency (chances are if you’re reading this that you’d also be equally horrified by people graffitiing or clambering on two thousand year old ruins), but also raising awareness and educating those who don’t know better (or don’t seem to care). Due to the size of Pompeii, there will never be enough guards or staff around to make sure people are conducting themselves in a way which doesn’t cause harm to the ruins - so it’s important that other visitors step up to protect our shared heritage.

Historical fiction about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, covering a period of four days in 79 A.D. Attilius is an Aquarius, an engineer in charge of ensuring the water supply, of the Bay of Naples region. Attilius has been sent by Rome to replace the previous Aquarius, who has disappeared. The plot revolves around the Aqua Augusta, which has been damaged by natural phenomena. With the Roman Navy at Misenum, tourists in Baiae, Herculaneum and Pompeii, and engineer Attilius, a decent and reliable man, heads towards the aquaduct to repair it, before the reservoir runs dry.Ellis's team is particularly interested in a corner of the city near the Porta Stabia gate that is a bit off the beaten archaeological path. All along the Mediterranean coast, the Roman empire's richest citizens are relaxing in their luxurious villas, enjoying the last days of summer. The world's largest navy lies peacefully at anchor in Misenum. The tourists are spending their money in the seaside resorts of Baiae, Herculaneum, and Pompeii.

And yet, the very act which destroyed Pompeii with such callous, brutal efficiency under an avalanche of ash and stone, would preserve it for the ages. Others spots to make a point of visiting (most of which you'll inevitably pass by or through as you make your way around) are The Temple of Isis, The House of the Mysteries, The House of Julia Felix, The House of the Faun, and the Teatro Grande. Darkness fell, not the dark of a moonless or cloudy night, but as if the lamp had been put out in a dark room," wrote Pliny the Younger, who witnessed the cataclysm from across the Bay of Naples. Torre Annunziata | Similar to the above, but this one is more of a Plan C in case you can't find anything that suits your travel budget or style in Pompei. Long, warm summer evenings allow for other events too, including evening walks, concerts and theatrical performances. As she adjusts to this new life, Amara is still haunted by her past. At night she dreams of the wolf den, and the women she left behind. By day, she is pursued by her former slavemaster. The realities of her existence are made bearable by the other she-wolves at the Wolf Den. Together they can gossip, offer comfort and dream; and their dreams, when woven together, create a picture of life that makes Amara catch her breath. Much research has centered on public buildings and breathtaking villas that portray the artistic and opulent lifestyle enjoyed by the city's wealthy elite. There are a few hazards to this work,” laughs Benefiel, a 35-year old classicist from Washington and Lee University who has spent part of the past six summers in Pompeii. “Sometimes the guards forget to let me out of the buildings at the end of the day!”
