On top there’s a single button which starts the cleaning process. An integrated LED light indicates status – it’s white when cleaning, blinks slowly while charging, or turns red if there's trouble. Above the button is a tiny Wi-Fi status light that glows when connected.

As far as flooring goes, most of my crib is made up of plush carpeting, with vinyl and tile used in the kitchen, bathroom, and utility spaces. For carpet cleaning, I needed to have "Vacuum Power" (located in the Ecovacs app) set to either Max or Max+ if I wanted to make sure my carpeting received the best vacuuming possible. On the "Standard" setting, I noticed that the bot would often skip over surface-level debris, especially during the tried and true oats-on-the-floor test. On lower settings, the N10 Plus simply ignored a bulk of the oats it passed over. The infrared sensor around the front of the U2’s bumper powers the bot’s anti-collision tech. We found it works well when it comes to wall avoidance – stopping just short of large barriers – but it’s not quite as proficient at avoiding smaller obstacles like furniture legs.Add in the best-in-class mopping function and you’re on to a winner. More than any other I’ve tested to date, this robot could genuinely significantly reduce the amount of vacuuming and mopping you need to do around the house. While you can manually start a cleaning cycle with the Ecovacs Deebot N10 Plus by pressing its Power button, all of your settings, vacuum/map customizations, and scheduling functions are located in the easy-to-use Ecovacs Home app (available for iPhone/iPad and Android). And as far as robot vacuums app go, I was actually quite pleased with the UI of this one. The X1 Omni cleaned for up to 145 minutes in Auto mode before running low on battery life. That's a solid result, but not the best we've seen from an Ecovacs model (the Deebot Ozmo T8 AIVI cleaned for 171 minutes in Auto mode). Ecovacs says the X1 Omni can clean for up to 260 minutes in quiet mode. When you pop open the top of the Auto-Empty Station, you’ll find the preinstalled 2.5-liter dust bag isn’t massive, but should last a month or two. In addition, your first dust bag replacement is provided. Under the station is a large tube into which the dust bin is emptied, adding to the Auto-Empty Station's overall size. Nevertheless, it’s on a par with rival vacuums, and not an eyesore by any means.

Now in terms of actual cleaning capabilities, for the few weeks that I was able to use the Ecovacs Deebot N10 Plus, I found that it did a relatively decent job of cleaning my apartment. Suction power can also be controlled through the app – we’d say standard vacuum power is more than enough for hard surfaces, and fares surprisingly well on carpets too. You also have the option of boosting the bot’s suction power with Max or Max+ modes, and these are what you want to go for if you need a more thorough job. Similarly, you can control how much water the droid is using while mopping your floor – we’d suggest using the highest water setting to cope with more porous surfaces, and for your best chance at a passable job. On Deebot’s first run around your apartment, it creates a highly accurate map, so you can clean custom areas based on needs. It’s also from here that you can adjust settings and create schedules. You’ll even receive notifications on your phone if there are issues during cleaning and also once cleaning is complete.

I’ve been cultivating a small patch of dirt in my kitchen that I’ve been using to test robot mops – a spillage of sugary drink that has developed a coating of stubborn dirt over time – and none has made the slightest difference. Of course, Ecovacs’ Deebot T9+ is more than just a vacuum. It offers air freshener and mopping abilities too. Swapping between the two functions is as simple as putting in a different component. It registers immediately, and you can send the device on its way. I also really liked the handy readout at the top of the screen that gives a detailed breakdown of your current cleaning cycle in terms of actual cleaning status, area cleaned, and how long the N10 Plus has been running. The Deebot T9+ is about the same size as the Deebot N8+, measuring 3.75in / 30cm tall and 13.9in / 353cm in diameter, which leaves a good amount of space for it to fit under and around furniture. However, it probably won’t clear most couches and tighter spaces.
