About this deal

Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku, Vol. 4". Viz Media. Archived from the original on June 5, 2020 . Retrieved June 5, 2020.

Gabimaru is a reluctant but skilled and nearly indestructible ninja. He is sentenced to be executed, which is no easy thing. They try boiling him, burning at the stake, and various other tactics, before he gets recruited for a suicide mission: to find the Elixir of Life on a mysterious island. So far, all missions the shogunate has sent to the island have resulted in total loss of life, so why not send a rag-tag, cutthroat group of murderers on death row? Each criminal is assigned a baby-sitter in the form of elite executioners, just to keep them from wandering off. The prize for the one who finds the Elixir? A full pardon!I didn't know what I expected but it far exceeded my expectations. I was already crying in Chapter 1 and just going 🥺 over Gabimaru. In August 2018, Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku was cited as the most popular series on Shōnen Jump+. [65] Over 1million copies of the series were in circulation by June 2019, a number that grew to 2.5million by August 2020, and more than 3.6 million by April 2021. [18] [62] [66] By December 2022, the manga had sold over 4 million copies. [67] Volume two of the series sold 16,328 copies during its first week of release. [68] Volume four sold 20,139 its first week, [69] while volume five sold 45,912 copies. [70] The thirteenth and final volume of the series sold 39,759 copies in its first week. Gabimaru is a playable character in the July 2022 Nintendo Switch video game Captain Velvet Meteor: The Jump+ Dimensions. [63] From here the authorities decide to send him, along with other criminals, to an island. Each criminal is accompanied by an executioner, with Gabimaru being paired with Sagiri. Typically all of the criminals are violent in specific ways, one Kunoichi has the ability to kill via a kiss (or that is what I think she does as it’s only shown in one panel). It’s clear from the very beginning that Gabimaru is a highly skilled ninja (let’s just ignore the fact he was captured), that’s not the point of this Manga. What we have here is a Battle Royale scenario as the criminals all search the island for the Elixer of Life, many of them deciding that the way to ensure that they’re the ones who find it, and thus are awarded with a pardon for their crimes, is to turn on the rest whilst there will be others that decide to team up (though that hasn’t happened as yet). Sagiri and Gabimaru's relationship isn't one of dominance or admiration or quiet lust, it's a bond of mutual respect formed by an emotional connection. Sagiri isn't sexualized, there's no "will they, won't they" and both of their abilities are shown as burdensome tools, rather than aspects of their personality. It's a nice change of pace and offers enough possibilities to spice up what could otherwise become another battle manga. Of course, with criminals being unleashed on this island all with same goal, there’s bound to be some chaos. We got some brief glimpses of this in the first volume with some criminals forming alliances while others attempted and some succeeded to kill off their competition. But, it seems that the other criminals are the last of their worries with the introduction of that monster at the end of Volume 1. The island is full of unknown terrors, and the mystery it holds keeps me reading, but it’s the emotional moments you get from characters, like Gabimaru and Sagiri, that have me hooked even more. One of its major appeals is the sheer amount of violence that occurs in this series, but the story is never sacrificed by any means. As a result, Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku is one of my favorite manga releases to debut this year and I’m excited to catch up on the volumes that have been released so far!

Yuji Kaku originated Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku from a framework that had "several pairs of people whose interests aren't aligned [being] thrown into an enclosed space and forced to work together." The story was initially about children sent to a youth detention center and the lawyers fighting for them. But through discussions with his editor, the setting was dropped and they added different characters to the same framework, which was kept because Kaku has always liked the way human relationships change and wanted to write a story about that. He felt a Shinsenkyo setting would work with any type of story and be easy to write, and thought it would be more interesting if a character "who isn't supposed to die" finds themselves in a near-death situation.
