About this deal

Unfortunately, Co-op's beans didn't quite hit the mark for me. Once again, I found the texture a little soft and the sauce quite runny - a theme which appeared among many of the cheaper supermarket own-brand versions. HP Foods Limited, formerly based in Birmingham, England was best known as the producer of HP, Lea & Perrins, and Daddies sauce brands. [2] It was also the UK licensee, from Heinz, of Chinese food and condiment brand Amoy Food. [2] [3] They are 'low sugar' according to NHS guidelines , but it comes down to how much you eat, and what you have them with. A full can of the most sugary beans on test (Lidl's) adds up to 19g – about four teaspoons of sugar. Despite losing points on the texture, the taste was pleasant and fairly middle-of-the road. Overall, a decent option if you're looking to save cash on named brands.

Aldi, Lidl, Asda and Tesco insiders share supermarket own-brand 'secrets' to help others save money Heinz baked beans may have been around for more than 130 years, but the iconic brand didn't stand out in our taste tests. In fact, most supermarket own-brands scored higher, with one cheaper can impressing our panel of baked bean enthusiasts beyond all others. So this beans challenge would actually be quite interesting – do branded beans make a difference? Can I save money by buying the own-brand ones? I tried individual 415g cans from Aldi, Lidl, and Asda as well as the Heinz and HP varieties.

From Our Partners

Lidl Newgate Baked Beans (45p/420g) – 72% Which? said:"These split our panel. Half loved the flavour, but the rest found it either too weak or too strong. Most agreed that the texture of both beans and sauce was about right, though." M&S Baked Beans (50/400g) – 73% Which? said:"These beans are pretty good across the board, although 38% found the texture of the sauce too thin."

Baked beans are an affordable and delicious staple in many UK households, with millions of tins sold each year. Recent years have seen baked bean pizzas, baked bean crisps, and the (albeit more niche) baked bean tequila shot - proving we'll incorporate beans into our diets by any means possible. The make-up of the panel broadly represents the demographic profile of adults in the UK. Each brand of baked bean was assessed by 82 people. And while, like many foods, the cost of a can of beans has risen over the past year, our supermarket winners remain modestly priced. The cheapest Best Buy cost just 50p a tin.

Most baked bean brands have low-sugar/low-salt versions, so you may want to give them a try if you're watching your intake. We only included standard versions in our taste test to ensure products were comparable. A blind taste test has ranked a number of own-brand baked beans ahead of established names like Heinz and HP. The brands were assessed by 82 people each, with the panellists rating the taste, texture, aroma, and appearance of each product. The overall score is based on: 50% taste, 20% texture, 20% aroma. 10% appearance.

Martin Lewis: What the Autumn Statement means for you – including wages, benefits, pensions, ISAs, national insurance and more As they are a fixture of most UK households, we decided to put several supermarkets' offerings to the test, and it was no easy task. I tried nine tins of baked beans over the course of several days, which had an impressive combined weight of more than 2.4kg. Both employees and self-employed workers will pay less in National Insurance from next year, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has announced in today's Autumn Statement. Beans doesn't have to mean Heinz. You can save on this store-cupboard staple without compromising on flavour by going for a cheap supermarket tin instead. Autumn Statement: State pension confirmed to rise by 8.5% from April 2024 – while some benefits will go up by 6.7%They are just a bit more than a third of the price of the Heinz variety and from now on I’ll be switching to Lidl and saving a big chunk of change for those lazy days when there’s a toddler to feed and not enough hours in the day. A Kraft Heinz spokeswoman said: "Our loyal consumers are at the centre of everything we do, and we remain committed to providing them with tasty, nutritious and high-quality Heinz Baked Beans." The panellists rated the taste, texture, aroma and appearance of each brand of baked beans and told us what they liked and disliked about each one.

Waitrose Essential Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce (55p/400g) – 71% Which? said: "The texture of the sauce was just right according to most, but they were thought to be too weakly flavoured by nearly half our panel. Around a third also found the beans too firm and not sweet enough. There are however some things I firmly believe are better if you buy the branded version. Tomato ketchup and HP sauce always have to be branded. Heinz tomato soup is always better. But Weetabix, rice, and flour? I’m an own-brand gal. With food prices rising and many households looking for ways to save cash, Asda's affordable Just Essentials range has proven a hit with customers in recent months. It was the cheapest of all the options I tried, and sadly the taste reflected that. HP is perhaps one of the lesser-known brands when it comes to baked beans, so I didn't have any expectations when it came to trying them. A bit of research afterwards revealed HP is owned by Heinz, but I wasn't able to tell this based on the flavour.Benefits from an Student & Teacher Store cannot be used together with any other offer or promotion that is not featured within the Student Store itself. Most supermarket own-brand baked beans fared relatively well, so wherever you shop, the own-brand is worth a go. • Co-op Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce (55p/400g) – 73% Which? said:"The texture of the beans and sauce were just right according to three quarters of our panel. But more than four in 10 thought them too weakly flavoured and not sweet enough." I was surprised that the beans themselves were quite soft, even before cooking. Personally, I prefer a more solid bean to avoid the catastrophic bean mush when cooking, so these were a little on the soft side for me. The news will be a blow to Heinz, which recently clung on to its first place in a Which? ketchup taste test, but had to share its crown with Co-op's own brand tomato sauce, which costs less than half the price.
