About this deal

Each instrument was single-mic’d, except for Jimmy Cobb’s drum kit, which got two (one aimed at the snare, the other at the cymbals), for a total of 7. The lasting value of a recorded masterpiece lies not only in the notion of reaching and grasping the music itself, but in using it as a doorway to other pathways. Kind of Blue, it can be argued, earns its accolades less for its continuing sales or critical popularity, and more for its long-serving role as the portal for so many who come to jazz for the first time. Kind of Blue is arguably Miles’ greatest hit, the one album with which he is most associated. It is still one of the most popular jazz albums of all time, outselling most contemporary recordings and prized as a harbinger of modal jazz and revered as a paradigm of improvisation over reduced harmony—creating a perfect balance of sound and space. Outside the jazz realm, it is consistently chosen by music historians and critics as one of the best albums of all time, alongside evergreen classics by The Beatles, Elvis Presley, and others. From the lead-in groove to the run-out groove, there is no pitch to the profile, allowing the customer’s stylus to play truly perpendicular to the grooves from edge to center. It's the best selling jazz album ever, one of the most influential too, arguably the one that produced a shift from riffing on chord based tunes to modal excursions that gave musicians newfound improvisational freedom. Cynics and the selfish will react to yet another Kind of Blue reissue by claiming that "everyone" already owns a copy but of course that's not true. And no one owns a 200 gram UHQR Clarity vinyl copy pressed one at a time on a manual Finebuilt press.

The engineering parameter that's murkier is the friction between the stylus and record. That's what's yanking on the effective moment arm to torque the tonearm toward the middle. The friction is a function of several factors, but is dominated by the coefficient of friction between the stylus and the vinyl. The geometry of the stylus also matters because it changes which direction the groove pushes on stylus. All-in-all this edition of Kind of Blue meets the highest audiophile standards and offers the truest sound for the most enjoyment. The sound quality of this release is beyond any other copy ever released, and I can’t add anything else that hasn’t already been said by the previous reviewers. I wanted the pressing to be perfection like the first two UHQR’s, but unfortunately perfection isn’t always attainable, hence the four stars. I can’t wait to see what the next UHQR title will be, but count me in.Second, there is another version ( Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue) with "Kind Of Blue" printed on one line on the side B label. Again...My working knowledge of molding and casting is not theoretical. And one would have to really know little or nothing on the subject to actually believe there is zero transferability of experience and knowledge on the subject from one application to another. The laws of physics and the engineering principles in the field are very very transferable. But if you think not please feel free to explain on a technical level why you think not. It continues to be one of the most listened-to and studied recordings of all time, a required primer for many young musicians, and one of the most transcendent pieces of music ever recorded. Davis played trumpet sublime with his ensemble sextet featuring pianist Bill Evans, drummer Jimmy Cobb, bassist Paul Chambers, and saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley with Wynton Kelly playing piano on "Freddy the Freeloader."

Theoretically, 10 mothers can be made before the father is too worn and thus destroyed, and 10 stampers made from each mother before she too is destroyed. That's 100 stampers, and an audiophile label will never press more than 1000 records per stamper. Pressing every record they possibly could will yield 100,000 LPs.

I’m sure others will analyze the sound quality of this version of “Kind Of Blue” many times, so I’ll skip that. But I will say that it sounds THERE. When Coltrane entered on “Freddie…” I nearly fell out of my listening seat!

What can I say, You rally don't know what words mean. In this case "truth." But it is a word that is largely adored and equally misunderstood by those with intense religious beliefs. Again, you did no work for vinyl production. None. You lie by implication that you have knowledge about this." We finally received our copies of Kind of blue from the UK distributor, and upon listening to my copy, I had to reach out to say hello and thanks. This recording is superb! Sounds like it was recently recorded rather than 60 years ago. Simple an A++++++. There are some other albums I can think of for the UHQR treatment. "Dark Side of the Moon" "Close to the Edge" "Eat a Peach" for starters. I own many versions of this album. Simply breathtaking from the beginning to the end. The biggest “wow” factor is the dead silent noise floor of the vinyl. You will never see a better sounding version of KOB out there….not even close to this one. Can’t wait for Chad and the folks at AP to put out the 45rpm version of this album in the future. This 33rpm version is already a top 5 in my collection! Well done AP! Keep the UHQR releases coming!
