About this deal

So I'm not a big fan of the Hardness Settings. But that's not to say that all the extra features we get with the Smart Scoop are a bit rubbish: they're not. How well does the Pre-Cool function work?

We’ve been making ice cream for around three years now, and here are some of the more successful flavour combos we’ve tried. I think the Smart Scoop is probably the best looking domestic ice cream available at the moment. It has nicelines, a pleasing symmetry and a top quality brushed steel finish. It's going to look great on any counter top! 2. The Pre-Cool function is really helpful We love the look of the Cuisinart Iced Dessert Maker; its "Light Pistachio" hue makes it look like something from a 1950s American Diner. It's perhaps not as sleek-looking as the Lakeland model, but it certainly more fun. But I find it super useful to be told by the machine when it's at the optimal temperature to add my mixtures. So the pre-cool function gets a big thumbs up from me! How well does the Keep-Cool function work?Sorbet and gelato should contain less air than ice cream. And if you selectthese softer desserts onthe hardness settings, the program will end earlier, with the paddle having whipped less air into them. After hardening in the freezer, they will still have less air in them so will have the right consistency. Like the Lakeland Model, this is a machine that requires you to pre-freeze the metal mixing bowl, and considering that, it's not cheap; in fact, the Duronic Model further down this list does a similar job for a third of the price. When exactly your dessert is ready to be removed from the ice cream maker, will vary widely according to the recipe. You need to use your eyes and your experience. And if your eyes are telling you one thing and the machine is telling you another, it can lead to mistakes.

A one year warranty on a machine like this seems very tight to me. Compressor machines can be quite delicate. They're also an expensive investment. A decent length warranty provides peace of mind. And if Cuisinart can provide a 3 year warranty, why can't Breville? Alternatives to the Breville Smart Scoop

Unless of course the hardness settings are less about how hard the ice cream is frozen and more about how much air is whipped into it... We've spent the summer testing out some of the best models available on the market. Read on for our thoughts. How we tested This is the bottom line for me. But the Smart Scoop comes with a load of other features that also effect the quality of final ice cream. So let's have a look at those too... How well do the Hardness Settings work? Cons: Ludicrously expensive; have to make a brine every time you want to use it; doesn’t look as smart as the Sage The lid, the bowl and the paddle can be washed in the sink with warm soapy water. The Smart Scoop comes with a small brush to help you clean the tubes in the paddle and the bowl.
