The writing style is easy, almost too easy, and highly simplified. While this adds to the pace, it doesn’t evoke enough emotions to connect with the characters. Still, I wanted Giorgio to get his due for being an absolute douchebag, so one character did inspire strong emotions in me.

She leaned in to kiss him goodbye, pressing her body enticingly against his as their embrace grew more passionate, her hands roaming over his chest and rumpling his freshly ironed shirt.Busy, with the wedding plans. Although I just found out that Giorgio is leaving for a few days. It’s nothing great or memorable, though. A time pass read. Summary

I was hoping Giorgio would face the music for his actions. While he does to a minor extent, the book sadly sweeps a good portion of it under the carpet. Financial fraud is one thing, infidelity and mistreating women is another matter. He isn’t even questioned about it. That is NOT acceptable. They stared at each other in horror and disbelief at what had just happened. One of them had killed a man, a fellow soldier and compatriot. This crazy war had turned everything on its head, and now they were fugitives. I have read a couple of Carol's books before and I really enjoyed this one. There were bits that I found a bit disappointing but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the book.

Lately, that sensation was stronger than ever. Salvatore seemed distant, his kisses perfunctory. She told herself that after the wedding it would be different – they would be less busy, and she’d be able to devote herself to him once again – but deep down she knew it was more than that. They’d been married for twenty-five years, having celebrated their silver wedding anniversary in the spring, but their relationship had never felt the way it did right now. Salerno had been heavily bombed in recent weeks, the scene of fierce fighting. Italy had withdrawn its support for Germany, and the Allies had landed in Sicily before making their way to the mainland. Now the country had been split in two, with Mussolini’s supporters in the north and those loyal to King Victor Emmanuel in the south, effectively a state of civil war. The two young soldiers joined in heartily with each toast, raising their glasses high in the air before crashing them together with cries of ‘ Salute!’ They shouted and cheered with the rest of the patrons, hammering noisily on the wooden tabletop. It was the safest thing to do right now; impossible to know from appearances who was friend and who was foe.The Scots presenter was getting on with her usual day job when she let slip to viewers she's got another exciting project on the go. The book is set in beautiful Italy and it makes you want to visit there. I think the "villans" in this piece didn't get their comeuppance and I think that was the only mistake. Carol explained: "I have just finished one. I was reading a trilogy by Heather Norris which is really good. The last one was called Three Sisters. A very good book - I'd recommend it."

The actual story is set in 2005. While books set in the past only recreate a similar setting, this one feels like it was written at the same time but dusted and edited for publishing in 2023.
