So there is a strong case for using native plants, even in a small wildlife garden. Although where land is generally managed, such as in towns and cities, there’s much less chance of invasive plants escaping to the countryside. In a small urban garden I think it is always best to consider foliage first and flowers second. You should also opt for plants that grow up, rather than out and choose compact well-behaved shrubs. That’s probably why trimmed boxwood and sweet bay are so popular: they are controllable. You can however have a broader and more exciting planting palette than just plain green trimmed and trained evergreens. Bolder leaves instantly give more impact. North of the aviary, a group of early C20 greenhouses formerly stood to the east of the lawn and perimeter path (OS). From here the path dog-legs to the east before continuing northwards past a former park keeper's cottage of c 1927/8. It is situated along the eastern boundary of the Gardens and is now (2000) in use as a private dwelling. Further north the path passes the east gate, continuing north through pedestrian gates towards the north-eastern entrance.
