About this deal

As I write this, UV filters are modestly less expensive than clear filters so I suggest going with the UV variant. Full Frame Cameras Canon EOS-R Full Frame Cameras Nikon Z Full Frame Cameras Full Frame L Mount Cameras Sony Full Frame Cameras Canon EOS DSLR Full Frame Cameras Nikon DSLR Full Frame Cameras Vlogging Cameras Breakthrough uses SCHOTT Ultrawhite B270 optical glass and a 16-layer multi-resistant coating to ensure its UV filters do not negatively impact image quality. Digital sensors are unlike film. We used UV filters (light yellow tint) and Skylight filters (light pink tint) often. While film was sensitive to UV light, digital sensors are not and hence do not need UV filters in even bright sunlight

Photo gear shops make good money on UV filters and bags. It's stuff they can sell in addition to the camera. Or give away as an enticement. Some cheap filters do not provide enough clearance for these front lens elements and can cause scratches during installation. They have seen examples where the AF worked badly and shots were degraded because someone fitted an el cheapo UV filter. They're into resolution numbers, lab tests and really, they can see / measure the degradation, no matter how slight.Breakthrough’s X4 UV filters are well-designed, optically excellent and have proven rugged and reliable for me, making their recommendation an easy one.

Although it's usual for photographers to use filters to protect their lenses from scratches, thumbprints, and dust, the real benefit lies in the way filters improve images and, in some instances, achieve effects that even the best photo editing suites cannot replicate. There are many different types of lens filters, each for a specific purpose.

With filters being rather easy to counterfeit, I suggest purchasing them only from a reputable retailer to insure that you are getting the filter you expect. You will seldom see a difference in your image quality caused by using a high quality protective filter, but whether or not to use a protection filter is the big running debate. If shooting in harsh elements (such as in salt water spray or in very dusty conditions), I highly recommend using a protection filter.

A few points

I also feel a bit less protective of my filter-protected lenses (I might let a friend actually hold it!). I have also found the high end Hoya filters to be good (but those I have had were a pain to clean – they tended to smear).
