About this deal

Nor am I the only one who hates being cold. Batteries hate it too, and you might find that yours doesn’t have enough oomph in it to start your car if it’s very cold. You could carry a set of jump leads with you or you could do what I do and carry something like the WorkshopPlus SmartBox. When the temperature drops during winter, our natural inclination is to stay indoors and keep warm. But there are occasions when it is necessary to escape outside into the fresh air; one of these occasions is giving your car a clean to protect it from what the UK winter tries to throw at it. Not only is Autoglym Screenwash suitable for use with all vehicle and wash jet types (including headlight washers), it has been proven to shift all common contaminants and will not freeze down to -45oC, a temperature so cold that (in the UK at least) we rather feel that you’ll have bigger problems to worry about than a clean screen! Autoglym De-Icer is also supremely versatile and cost-effective thanks to its highly concentrated nature. It might appear small, but the 500ml bottle it’s supplied in can make up to 8L of screenwash, while its concentrated nature means that the precise strength is entirely in the hands of the end user, you. You can adjust the concentration to suit the demands of the season or the amount of grime currently on your screen. Autoglym’s Polar Series products are designed to speed up the car-cleaning process by letting the pH-neutral chemicals do most of the hard work and minimise the risk of us unintentionally contaminating the precious surface finish with swirls and scratches. You can also spray the outside of your windows with a night-before de-icer. The idea is to leave a thin film over the glass that protects and prevents it icing up in the first place. I’ve tried it and it really does work.

Once you’re in, please give the car time to heat up inside too. It might take ten minutes or more until your heater is pumping out hot air but it’s worth waiting because you risk the inside of the car steaming up as you drive along if you don’t. Prestone are a highly reputable brand in the UK and they are well-known for their premium products. Their Rapid De-Icer is a great example and it’s able to melt ice down to -40 and it works in seconds. The brand themselves even state that no other de-icer on the market works faster than their formula. Overall, the CarPlan Blue Star is the best budget de-icer that comes in a large aerosol and provides fast acting de-icing on all car windows and windscreens.

The night before

Autoglym De-Icer works best when heavy snow deposits have been removed beforehand, whereupon its unique formulation can get to work. Let the ice thaw before removing any remaining deposits with a squeegee blade or windscreen wipers. Speaking of frozen rubber, a thin smear of silicone lubricant or Vaseline on the door seals will help stop them freezing up. Done properly, you should only have to do it once or twice a season. You could also use neat screenwash if you’ve got some to hand. Just try not to splash too much on the bodywork; it shouldn’t stain, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Dirty windscreens can be annoying at best, downright dangerous at worst, distracting you from the road ahead and even partially obscuring approaching hazards. It’s also that bit easier for your screen to become utterly filthy as autumn gives way to winter and the roads get dirtier, so all the more reason to invest in a bottle of one of the unsung heroes of the Autoglym range, Ultimate Screenwash. Another popular de-icer by CarPlan and also one of the cheapest on the market is their Blue Star aerosol formula. According to the brand, it’s specifically designed to defrost windscreens and melt ice fast. A: There is no need to dilute Autoglym De-Icer. Simply spray directly onto any icey glass work on the vehicle and watch the De-Icer actively melt this away. While there is no specific law that says it is illegal to drive with snow on your car, the Highway Code and the Road Traffic Act say you must, by law, be able to see out of every glass panel in your vehicle. You also want to make sure your lights, indicators and number plates are all visible too.

If you are looking to beat the morning deicing routine, the CarPlan Demon Ice is the best night before deicer. Unlike similar alternatives, this particular formula even doubles up as a normal deicer and this can be very useful. Don’t forget to brush all the snow away from the door openings. If you forget then the snow will fall inside the car when you open the door. If you’ve treated yourself to a proper snow-clearing brush then now’s the time to christen it, but a soft-bristled dustpan brush will do the job just as well. Now scrape and repeat squirting as often as necessary until all your windows are free of snow and ice. Please don’t just clear a letter box-sized space on the windscreen and peer through it like a WWII tank commander. It’s dangerous and illegal and just makes you look silly. By the way, an ice-scraper should only be used on glass, never the metal bodywork of the vehicle. With extensive research this product is harmless to vehicle paintwork, rubber, plastics and glass yet amazingly still effective all the way down to -50°C!
