Nowadays it is very easy to display numbers and letters across multiple LED displays using micro-controllers, such as the Arduino or Raspberry-Pi, along with a small bit of software related code to display the required digits. But sometimes as an Electronics student or hobbyist we want to display two or more numbers or digits as part of our project or digital logic circuit. So how can we do this.Fig. 5.6.4 shows how the propagation delays created by the gates in each flip-flop (indicated by the blue vertical lines) add, over a number of flip-flops, to form a significant amount of delay between the time at which the output changes at the first flip flop (the least significant bit), and the last flip flop (the most significant bit).

The first half of the digital counter circuit works the same as before except that the activation of the pushbutton SW 1 increments the “one’s” (also called “units”) LED display. This means that zeroes to the right of the decimal point and zeroes between significant figures are themselves significant.

A typical use of the CLR inputs is illustrated in the BCD Up Counter in Fig 5.6.11. The counter outputs Q 1 and Q 3 are connected to the inputs of a NAND gate, the output of which is taken to the CLR inputs of all four flip-flops. When Q 1 and Q 3 are both at logic 1, the output terminal of the limit detection NAND gate (LD1) will become logic 0 and reset all the flip-flop outputs to logic 0. Numbers are often rounded to a specified number of significant figures for practicality, e.g. to present in a news broadcast or to put down in a table neatly. Rounding a number to n significant figures happens in a similar way to rounding to n decimal places, with an important difference. We start by counting from the first non-zero digit for n significant digits and then round the last digit. However, we do not fill in the remaining places to the right of the decimal point with zeroes.

A simple & fast character counter

Most of us start with counting when we are very little. We usually count things, objects, people, etc. In this activity we are going to count the number of digits that are the same. At Facebook, users upload and post new photos every day. When uploading pictures, users may need to write a description, which is less than 63,206 characters. Once uploaded, few friends will comment about the post, which should give them a character limit of 8000 characters. And when it comes to the other character counters found online, we challenge you to find one that is more accurate and easy to use. Although this problem prevents the circuit being used as a reliable counter, it is still valuable as a simple and effective frequency divider, where a high frequency oscillator provides the input and each flip-flop in the chain divides the frequency by two.
