About this deal

This much-loved spirit has a distinct flavor profile and a history to match. The time, care, dedication, and craftsmanship that goes into Bourbon make it quite unlike anything else you’ll spot in the liquor cupboard. In 1964, Congress even declared Bourbon “America’s Native Spirit.” Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products.

There are different types of bourbon on the market, depending on how they’re made. Single barrel bourbon, sweet or rare. Learn more about the terms and distillery processes to understand what goes into making a delicious bottle.

The Small Batch recipe: If you’re new to bourbon (and Four Roses) it’s worth knowing about this distillery’s unique recipe system. As with all bourbons, the grains ( mashbill) used to make the whiskey are a minimum of 51% corn, plus rye and malted barley. Like Buffalo Trace, Elijah Craig’s mash bill is higher in corn proportion, at about 78 percent corn and 10 to 12 percent rye and malted barley. By law, bourbon must be 51 percent corn, with the rest of the necessary starch coming from grains like rye, wheat, and malted barley. Higher corn proportion can mean a smooth, slightly sweeter whiskey with a soft sweetness but a broader heat. Aging tends to be where higher corn whiskies gain their gravitas, threading char and oak lactones into the body of the whiskey; hence Elijah Craig’s baseline bottle is aged eight to 12 years. Elijah Craig claims the oldest single-barrel bourbon on the market. Finish: The finish of this bourbon is long, with cereal sweetness, winter spices and oak tannins. The woodiness is definitely the star of this show with this bourbon, delivering a cigar box dryness that lingers on the tongue. There’s subtle notes of butterscotch that add a lovely sweetness to the mix. There’s more of the same baking spices – allspice, clove and nutmeg which add a pleasant tingle to the end of each sip. And there’s no ‘right’ way to enjoy Bourbon, but there are certainly ways of drinking the liquor that make for a more enjoyable experience. A single barrel variant of Elijah Craig is currently available in 18- and 23-year old bottlings. Heaven Hill has offered a single barrel version of Elijah Craig carrying 20, 21, and 22 year old age statements as well. For starters, Woodford Reserve pairs exceptionally well with a charcuterie plate. The salty and smoky flavours of the cured meats combine nicely with the sweetness of the bourbon. A classic cheese board features nutty and earthy cheeses that provide a great contrast to the bourbon’s oaky notes. For their small batch bottle, they use recipes 2 and 3 from a ‘high rye’ mashbill B, mixed with recipes 7 and 8 from lower rye mashbill E. This might seem a little confusing, but they do this to balance the spicier rye mashbill with their sweeter corn mashbill for an overall more rounded flavour.Great Crossing Baptist Church". As the saying goes, “All Bourbon is whiskey but not all whiskey is Bourbon.” But there’s more to it than just semantics. If you’re a whiskey (and especially Bourbon) drinker, you need to know the differences. Bourbon is made by aging 51 percent corn-based whiskey in charred American oak barrels, but that wasn’t always the case. Charred barrels weren’t a must (definitely not a legal must) in the early days of American bourbon whiskey (the turn of the 18th century).

For mains, steak or pork chops are excellent choices for Elijah Craig bourbon pairings. Elijah Craig provides an ideal balance between its caramelised sugar notes and robust oakyness that complement steak’s natural flavours. Elijah Craig also brings out the subtle sweetness in pork chops while adding an oaky layer to each bite. Finish: Elijah Craig Small Batch bourbon has a soft, smooth finish that lingers on the tongue. Peak notes of sweet caramel and creamy vanilla are later followed by hints of oak tannins, coffee grounds and citrus peel. As the finish fades away, it leaves notes of sliced apples, citrus peel and liquorice as well as dark chocolate. It’s a pretty good finish for this tasty bourbon.

Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). Regardless of whether the Service offers the functionality to contribute, you are solely responsible and liable for any content and information that you create, upload, post, publish, link to, duplicate, transmit, record, display or otherwise make available on the Service or to other Members, such as chat messages, text messages, videos, audio, audio recordings, music, pictures, photographs, text and any other information or materials, whether publicly posted or privately transmitted (“Contributions”). Small batch bourbon is made when a distiller selects and combines a small range of unique barrels to create a single batch of whiskey. Compared to using a typically wider ‘pool’ of barrels for lesser quality (wider) blends, small batch is much more selective. This method allows the master blender to maximise specific barrels’ characteristics to create a superior and focused product. This careful selection and blending is more labour intensive, which generally makes small batch bourbons more expensive than standard bottlings but cheaper than single barrel bourbons. Arguably, the most crucial step of the Bourbon production process comes next: aging. Whiskey must be aged for at least two years before it can be called “straight whiskey”. A spirit distilled for a shorter period of time is known as “white dog” and has a paler, almost clear coloring and a sharp flavor. In 2011, Elijah Craig 20 Year Old Single Barrel (Barrel #3735) was named by Whisky Advocate magazine as "American Whiskey of the Year". [15]

The signature Elijah Craig Small Batch (94proof, 47% ABV) offering is the only Elijah Craig release available for private barrel selection. It owes its distinctive warm spice and subtle smoke flavor to level 3 charred oak barrels. Mouthfeel: Overall, the texture is incredibly creamy and smooth. It has a full bodied viscosity that makes this bourbon feel decadent on the palate. It’s a warming mixture of spice and caramelised sweetness that’s incredibly easy to drink. Elijah Craig Small Batch Barrel Proof releases #12 (old label, left bottle) and #14 (new label, right bottle). Release No.
