The HM70R utilizes 3 LEDs: A main LED, a flood LED, and two red LEDs. Fenix is open about the LED make and model, so that’s nice, and here we have the Luminus SST40 for the main LED, the Cree XP-G2 HE handles the flood, and a pair of 2835 SMD LEDs handle the red light function. Even though it exists in the shadow of the SFT-40-W these days, the SST40 is still a good high output LED. It’s a 5050 size LED with a low vF, good efficiency, and can handle about 8 amps if direct-driven with good output (albeit a bit green). The large 21700 size battery lends itself to longer runtimes and higher output, and while I think 18650 size headlamps strike the best balance of output, runtime, size, and weight, I give mad props to Fenix because despite the larger battery, they’ve kept it relatively compact and lightweight. The headband is very nice, and adds a third top strap for extra stability to keep the band from slipping down. The band is removable for cleaning or replacement, and has the Fenix logo done in reflective elements on the side for visibility at night, and the front and sides of the headband has grippy rubber bands for extra slip prevention. The band is easily adjusted as well, and although it’s not as wide or soft as the one of the Cyansky HS6R, it’s still very good and comfortable to use.

About ANSI FL1 standards: The runtime is measured until the light drops to 10% of its initial output (30 seconds after turning on). This does not mean that the flashlight is not usable anymore. The last column shows how long the light actually works till it shuts off. If there is a + symbol, it means that the test was stopped at that particular point, but the light was actually still running. This happens on certain occasions, with certain drivers, firmware, or batteries. Included a 21700 Li-ion battery, a 18650 Li-ion battery can be used as well (together with an ALF-18 battery holder). A: HM70R is rechargeable. The charging time is about 4 hours. (The indicator on the battery case will display red while charging, and will turn green when fully charged.) The output specs scale nicely with Fenix’s figures, and this is what I’ve come to expect from them, and as usual, you can trust Fenix output specs. The flood LED scales a bit higher than the spot LED, and that’s typical of my sphere that favors floody lights over more throwy lights. 2500 Lumens from Turbo on the spot LED is very impressive! It’s the highest output I’ve seen in a headlamp so far and more than enough light for just about any task. Even after 10 minutes, maintaining almost 1000 Lumens is equally impressive.The Fenix HM70R Headlamp has a maximum output of 1600 lumens from the main Luminous SST40 LED and is powered by an included 21700 li-ion battery. In addition to the main white output, the head torch also offers a Cree XP-G2 HE neutral white output and 2 x 2835 red LEDs.

The included 21700 rechargeable 5000 mAh lithium-ion battery is charged inside the headlamp via the hidden USB Type-C charging port which can be revealed by unscrewing the cover on the same side as the button. Plug in the included USB Type-C cable at one end and plug the standard USB-A end into a USB power source. The charging indicator will go red to show charging is in progress and change to green charging is complete after approximately 4 hours with a 2 A output.

For extra durability and resilience the HM70R is made from lightweight aluminium which provides drop resistance up to 2 metres distance as well as being waterproof to IP68 standard, and also withstands extreme weather temperatures of -35° to 40° (cold weather battery recommended for extreme cold temperatures). The modes are well-spaced in each lighting mode set, and although there’s no low moonlight, the ‘Read’ mode is pretty low. I like how they added two extra lighting levels for the flood LED, and I like how Turbo is included in the Spotlight Mode set by default. Once again it’s typical Fenix here with the runtimes as well, with everything looking really close to the factory specs…except for High on the floodlight mode, which on the first runtime test came in at ANSI 4 hours 27 minutes, and 4 hours 38 minutes to shut down. What’s this? The floodlight’s High mode must have had a rough day at the office since it called it quits over 3 hours early. I ran the test again and nearly duplicated it, which is highly unusual for Fenix since they use the same battery for their lab testing.
