About this deal

Although we no longer accept restoration work, we are proud to have built the most comprehensive professional antique furniture restoration workshops in the South West of England.

As mentioned above, for the long term build up of spray liquid polishes. If really bad then use this method: Unlike traditional finishes, our hard wax oil is simple to apply with a cloth, brush, or roller, providing a protective, satin sheen to your wood. And with our professional trade tips, you'll have all the guidance you need for a flawless finish. To illustrate the process of restoring antique furniture with hard wax oil, let's take a look at a real-life example: the restoration of an antique sewing box from the early 1900s. Our YouTube channel is dedicated to furniture restoration and refinishing. There are numerous videos that provide detailed tutorials, tips, and techniques for restoring antique furniture. These can be an invaluable resource for DIY enthusiasts looking to refine their skills and learn new techniques. Colron also produce wood dyes that may be cheaper and easier to get hold of locally. They also have a greater range of colours. It's not a true oil stain, more of a combination of oil with a stronger solvent. You can easily find Colron wood dyes online. Our Hard Wax Oil is entirely free of hazardous compounds and is undergoing certification. It is suitable for use on all untreated wooden surfaces, including doors, floors, tables, and kitchen countertops. Slip-Resistant ( Rated R12) We have ensured there is enough in each tin to cover a single piece of furniture (depending on the absorption rate of the wood) such as dining table, gate-leg table, bureau, chest of drawers, or four to six dining chairs. Apply the first coat: Using a brush or lint-free cloth, apply a thin coat of hard wax oil to the furniture, working in small sections and moving with the grain of the wood. Be sure to spread the finish evenly, avoiding drips and pooling So a single application, of any of our coloured wax polishes, will in the majority of cases, be all that is needed for years and years. And, if you do need or want to apply a second time only small amounts of colour will be transferred.

Your table has a 'full grain finish' meaning there are no textured, visible grain areas on the surface, it's completely smooth all over. I’d previously used osmo, applying this was a very similar experience - I’ve not done a like-for-like, but my general feel is that gilboys was more pleasant texture to apply and went further The spray oil will darken the exposed wood on an old flaky finish, at the same time as attracting dust and dirt. With gentle pressure spread the polish evenly over the surface in the direction of the grain, being careful not to over apply and avoid any upholstered areas. Once applied the surface area should look matt in appearance Antique gold has the same colour as rose gold but then I also added a darker cooler colour to it. I wanted this polish to enhance and nourish tired old antique finishes. You will find it looks dark but in truth I have only added ‘just enough’ colour. My aim was to make a reviving wax polish, not a stain with wax, as many other manufacturers seem to have done in the past. Our customers are almost addicted to the aroma of our wax. I think there is no way of really knowing until you try it. Our hard wax oil is a natural product. A single application will usually be dry in 8 hours. The drying time may extend in cold and humid environments. The above also applies to old 20th century furniture that have been finished with cellulose lacquers and varnishes (film coatings).

The sewing box was in need of repair and refinishing, but the owner wanted to maintain its historical integrity while ensuring it was functional and protected from potential staining. They decided to use Gilboys Hard Wax Oil, following the steps outlined in this guide. We would struggle to recommend a product because we knew that the ingredients were completely unknown and of such poor quality, also of unknown origin. As a nation we are all much more aware of where products and the ingredients come from, more so than ever before. Rougher surfaces may increase the drying time and will require more applications to achieve a smooth finish. Weekly furniture maintenance of removing dust can be done by simply using a slightly damp cloth and drying if needed with a clean dry cloth - beeswax polish will protect the surface for a very long time. I would strongly advise not using any polish on any modern piano. You may or may not have used household sprays in the past but I also strongly advise against this. Continuous use of these polishes will almost always lead to problems later : smeary - greasy - patchy.

Use the wire wool to spread the wax out over the table top with a little gentle pressure, running with the grain straight across from one side to the other until it is evenly distributed across the whole table top With a bowl of warm soapy water, (washing up liquid is fine) immerse the cloth in the solution and wring it out. metres of our antique restorers' recommended oil-free '0000' grade ultra-soft wire wool for easier application On initial application, if possible, remove the excess hard wax oil with a lint free cloth as you apply it. This will help reduce the drying time.

Complimentary sunflower seeds to grow as a 'Thank You' to the bees **unfortunately this offer excludes USA due to FDA regulations Gilboys use Pure Gum Turpentine tapped from living pine trees. I think it is often mistakenly thought to have come from the petrochemical crude oil industry but it is actually made from distilled and refined pine resin. Big brands will often use very evocative language to encourage you to use their products. Here’s a few of them: In July 2017 after much research and development, we improved the UV protection further by incorporating myrica wax into our special blend of natural waxes. Wax Laurel (morella pubescens) is a small shrub-like tree that grows at high altitudes (above 1,800m/6,000ft) in the Andes. It has been used by rural communities settled in the southern region of Colombia for centuries. It is a fast growing, resistant and adaptable tree that colonises areas with poor and eroded soils. This makes it an ideal species for environmental restoration in places that have been degraded. It produces a wax that covers its berries to protect them against the moisture loss and extreme environmental stresses that life at such altitudes demands. What we were interested in was how the wax protects the berry from the increased UV exposures at high altitude and how this property could provide your furniture with improved protection from sun-bleaching. [ read more about myrica wax] I would recommend stripping and sanding your table top as I demonstrate in the video (below) and then assess the colour. If you feel you still would like to make it darker then this is the point to do it.If the surface is patchy and dull in places but you haven't used any spray polish on it, the surface may appear blotch or patchy because of a number of reasons or a combination of them. I’ll try to explain in more detail: When you (sparingly) apply beeswax polish to a surface it will have a matt appearance. The solvent (pure pine turpentine in the case of Gilboys polishes) needs time to be absorbed or evaporate. The polish generally requires 20 to 30 minutes to dry enough to enable buffing. Predominantly oil-based polishes should not be used on period furniture or film coated furniture because the oil can damage the finish. I'll explain why: If you have a larger surface like the side of a chest of drawers or the top of a dining table apply the beeswax more evenly by dabbing the surface all over with small amounts of polish and then wipe in the direction of the grain to spread the wax evenly. *SECRET TRADE TIP: I have seen this problem many times on furniture that has been finished with a coloured spray lacquer. Examples of mass produced furniture makers that I have seen this problem on are Ercol, Old Charm, and Priory. It does also very much depend on the environment they have been kept in.
