About this deal

My latest book is The Everything Guide to Remote Work, which goes into great detail about a subject that I've been covering as a writer and participating in personally since well before the COVID-19 pandemic. I tested this heart-rate monitor during my Future app strength training sessions and during a couple of walks. Since Future automatically connects to my Apple Watch too, I was able to compare my Apple readings against Polar's. I found that I didn't get much information recorded during strength training on the Polar app with the exception of how long the workout was. But when I dove into the Apple Fitness app I was able to see that the Polar H10 captured my average heart rate and it matched with the data my Apple Watch collected. However, for my walks both indoors and outdoors, the Polar H10 was able to show me a detailed reading of the distance I walked, my average heart rate, calories burned, max heart rate, pace and fat burn percentage of calories. A line graph chart is also included that shows you a display of your heart rate and time during the activity. HRV Status is one of the latest, giving you an insight into your heart rate variability trends with plenty of contexts, but this just scratches the surface of how heart rate data feeds into Garmin Connect. It uses the same optical sensor technology used in Polar's older devices and offers many of the same features. That strap is machine washable, too, while the cradle that holds it in place solves one issue with the OH1 by preventing it from flipping over. The Garmin HRM Pro is the ultimate chest belt for Garmin watch owners and improves on the Garmin HRM-Run in a number of key ways. The belt is now swim proof, Garmin has added Bluetooth connectivity to its own ANT+ scheme, widening the selection of devices it’s compatible with, and the belt also supports offline workout recording for Garmin watches. This means, simply, that you can go for a swim or a run or whatever else without your watch on and still get data post workout. Great if you’ve forgotten to top up your watch or it runs out mid-activity. Overall, accuracy is excellent, it’s comfy, and battery life (supplied by a CR2032 coin cell) is superb at around a year. If you have a Garmin fitness watch and want the most versatile heart rate monitor, this is the belt to buy.

Athletes may be better served by chest strap heart rate monitors than wrist sensor heart rate monitors. “ Accuracy of commercially available heart rate monitors in athletes: a prospective study” Cardiovasc Diagn Ther. (August 2019) I couldn’t have asked for a more accurate or consistent product. Over many hours of use, it gave me heart rate readings that aligned with my perceived effort. The ANT+ connection means you’re not just limited to linking over Bluetooth. If you already have a turbo trainer, for example, you can connect to both this and a GPS watch in the same session. For swimmers and triathlete enthusiasts, the swim-proof design and 5kHz transmission (required for it to still be able to transmit data from underwater) makes this the top option for those planning to take dips in the pool, too. It connects to devices using ANT+ - and has a 5ATM waterproof rating that makes it safe for pool and open water swimming. Some wrist-based, or optical, monitors display time spent exercising in different heart rate zones. Trevor Raab Find the Best Device for Your Needs

Whoop 4.0 assesses your sleep quality, and the strain of your workouts and day-to-day life. It then measures your heart rate variability, and other key wellness factors, to tell you how recovered you are. It will also factor in data on sleep conditions, such as whether you had any caffeinated or alcoholic drinks, worked on a screened device, or shared your bed.

I connected it to my Wahoo account during a couple of walks and it functioned well for that purpose. Based on the other compatible apps, you may enjoy this heart-rate monitor if you're training for a long-distance race or taking a cycling class. When I used it for strength training I don't believe I got as much out of it as I would have liked compared to if I was training for a race. The margin of error for wrist sensor heart rate monitors can be as great as 15 percent. “ Heart rate measures from the Apple Watch, Fitbit Charge HR 2, and electrocardiogram across different exercise intensities” Physical Activity, Health and Exercise (January 2019) As a heart rate monitor, it's multifaceted. Fitbit has lurched towards wellness in recent years, so the heart rate monitor populates the new Health Metrics dashboard and keeps tabs on key metrics like resting heart rate, heart rate variability, and breathing rate. All of these can be signs of illness if there are spikes and dips – and the data is well-presented.Dark skin and tattoos can also affect accuracy, as skin tone can affect the light reflection. Sadly, not enough work has been done across the board to overcome accuracy issues because of ethnicity, so, if you have dark skin and want the very best data from your workouts, think about a chest strap. The ANT+ and Bluetooth support means the key connectivity bases are covered to work with apps and platforms like Zwift and it’ll play nice with Garmin watches and bike computers. There were no flaky pairing issues using it with the latest Fenix, Forerunner and Vivoactive watches. It’s waterproof up to 50 metres too, which means it can do the job of measuring heart rate in the pool or open water better than a watch will.

More importantly, ask your doctor whether they care if your resting heart rate is, say, 58 versus 60. The answer is probably no. It's more important to know whether your resting heart rate is within a healthy range. If your heart rate is 80 when it should be closer to 60, that's a potential concern. The point is that a super fine degree of accuracy isn't important for most consumers. Like the other products I tested, it connected smoothly to every other Bluetooth device I paired it with and consistently gave accurate readings (with zero glitchy behavior). I didn’t have problems figuring out how to use it, either. It would have been nice if it showed up in my devices as “CooSpo” (instead, it showed up as a series of numbers) but this wasn’t a huge deal.

It’s expensive for a plain heart rate monitor but this is a great all-rounder, offering accuracy in optical and electrical heart rate monitoring modes and a motivational fitness app to help you get more active. They can also be flummoxed by the movement of the wrist during exercises - ones such as press-ups, burpees, or Olympic lifting, as the skin contracts and tightens, making it harder for the sensor to do its job. Data is viewable inside Apple's Workout app, but the benefit of having a strong collection of third-party apps means you can also view that data in places like Strava and Runkeeper.
