About this deal

Outstanding resolution and superb overall performance in a light weight and compact zoom lens. The 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 (Model A063) is a fast-aperture standard zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. The lens is the successor to the popular 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A036), the lens that flipped conventional thinking about standard zoom lenses upside down. The lens focuses very closely (at a distance of about 7.1 inches) and the best macro results are at 28mm (1:2.7 life size). The minimum focus distance increases to about 15 inches at 75mm, but that's still good enough for decent, 1:4.1 macro results. The Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 offers similar macro capabilities, but the smaller 28-70mm F2.8 Contemporary doesn't focus as close—its best macro results are 1:3.3. Lens performance differs depending upon directions. Solid lines show performance in the sagittal (radial) direction while dotted lines indicate performance in the meridional (circumferential) direction. When sharp lenses capable of delivering uniform optical performance over the entire image field are tested, MTF charts show curves plotted in good balance.

The hydrophobic fluorine coating that’s applied to the front element is said to be highly resistant to fingerprints and its nine aperture blades are designed to render attractive bokeh in out of focus areas at wide apertures. It has sharp image quality around the centre of the frame through the entire aperture and zoom range, only encountering a bit of subtle softness on the far corners at it’s widest and brightest (f/2.8 at 28mm). This lens has a couple of extra external features which the original didn't have, in addition to the zoom and focus rings. The zoom ring is generously wide and has a tactile ridged, rubberised grip band, and it has an improved action that's a little smoother than the original. PAST BYLINES: Gear Patrol, PC Mag, Geek.com, Digital Photo Pro, Resource Magazine, Yahoo! News, Yahoo! Finance, IGN, PDN, and others. When looked at under my microscope, this Sony lens is much less sharp than the pro lenses from Nikon, Canon and LEICA I usually shoot, and as you can see at the top, it's more than sharp enough for actual photography. Bokeh is the quality, smoothness or gradation of the out of focus areas in an image. This lens shows very smooth and pleasant bokeh, which bodes well for good portraiture in particular. Here's Tamron's data for their old A036 lens that you only can buy used today. Feel free to compare its specifications and MTF curves to this Nikon's specification and Nikon's MTF diagrams. As you pull focus, you’ll notice very little focus breathing: When I adjusted the focus from infinity to 0.85m at 75mm focal length, I measured a 2% increase in magnification. This is hardly noticeable. Same at 28mm focal length.

As demonstrated by the product images, it's a much better match for a more professional full-frame camera like the Sony A7 IV that we tested it with, where it just feels better balanced and more "at home". In addition to features such as Moisture-Resistant Construction and a protective Fluorine Coating, the lens supports various features built into Sony E-mount cameras, including Fast Hybrid AF, Eye AF and in-camera lens corrections (shading, chromatic aberration, distortion). If I was working in nasty, dirty areas, I'd use an uncoated 67mm Tiffen UV filter instead. Uncoated filters are much easier to clean, but more prone to ghosting. So what if it's the same lens? Maybe Nikon is producing the design under licence, or maybe Tamron is making them for Nikon. It doesn't matter; my Nikon Z 28-75mm f/2.8 is a brilliant lens. The Sony 28-75mm f/2.8 has a primitive motorized AF system and is very soft on the sides at large apertures if you're shooting test charts, but for its intended purpose as a people and event lens, the Sony 28-75 handles well and gives great shots under all sorts of conditions. You usually want the sides soft to keep attention on the subject, and this lens has much less distortion than other similar lenses. This is a standard 28-75mm f/2.8 autofocus lens for Sony Alpha-mount cameras. It mounts, but does not work on my 1985 Minolta MAXXUM 7000; it won't autofocus or read apertures. At 35mm, central sharpness is excellent from f/2.8 to f/4, outstanding at f/5.6, very good from f/8 to f/16 and good at f/22. The edges are very good at f/2.8, excellent at f/4 and f/5.6, very good from f/8 to f/16 and again dropping off to just fair at f/22. With the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 wide open at f/2.8, you can see some noticeable light fall-off in the corners. Stopping down helps, although to completely get rid of this phenomenon, you will need to use an f-stop of f/5.6 or smaller.

In 2018 the 28-75mm f2.8 Di III RXD(model A036) was Tamron’s first native lens designed specifically for Sony’s full-frame mirrorless E-mount bodies. Now Tamron updated the optical formula of the lens, changed the type of focus drive, and added a focus set button plus USB-C port to make the lens configurable via computer and Tamron’s new Lens Utility (“TLU”). Tamron also increased maximum magnification a bit over the 1st generation to 1:2.5 although this is only achieved at the wide end with a correspondingly short working distance. The new lens is designated 28-75mm f2.8 Di III VXD G2 (model A063) and its size, weight, and looks are almost identical to its predecessor – albeit with a slightly glossier and less finger-print susceptible surface. So far the lens is only available for Sony E-mount but Tamron has announced that they are working on Z- and RF-mount versions of their lenses. It is the slimmest and by far the lightest standard zoom lens with a constant f2.8 focal ratio available for full-frame mirrorless cameras. It works great with my stabilized 45MP Z9, firmware 2.0, giving 3½ to 4⅓ stops of real-world improvement. Image stabilization: All lenses in this comparison rely on the sensor-based image stabilization of the respective mirrorless cameras – except for the Canon which has optical image stabilization built in. Compared to a pro-spec standard zoom like Sony’s FE 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master that weighs a hefty 886g, this lens is over 300g lighter, which is a significant weight saving. Tamron has made every effort to keep the lens as compact as possible too while being mindful of not compromising on optical quality. This lens uses the very latest VXD linear motor focus mechanism for fast, quiet and precise auto-focusing, and full-time manual focus override is also possible. Manual focusing is entirely electronic; the manual focus ring isn't connected to anything other than a digital encoder. In the customisation, the direction and speed of focus can be changed. The focus ring can be used for aperture instead of manual focusing, while the focus hold button can be customised for preset focus points 1 and 2 for video so that you can pull focus from one to the other at a designated speed.

The Sony 28-75mm f/2.8 is mostly plastic, except for the mount and glass. It feels OK; its the noisy AF system that creeps me out the most. Crop from above image at f/11. If this is 6" wide on your screen, the complete image printed at this same magnification would be 40 x 60." (1 x 1.5 meters.) Spectacular optical performance that inspires creativity TAMRON’s 2nd-generation high speed zoom lens optimized for the latest full-frame mirrorless cameras People worry waaaaay too much about lens sharpness. It's not 1968 anymore when lenses often weren't that sharp and there could be significant differences among them; ever since about 2010 all new lenses are all pretty much equally fantastic. A common issue when combining larger lenses with a smaller mirrorless body is ending up with a front-heavy system. This lens has a slightly improved minimum focusing distance of 18cm / 7.1" with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.7. The lens is supplied with plastic lens caps and a plastic flower-shaped lens hood (HA063) - there's no lens bag included. The filter size is 67mm. Focal Range
