Tabitha Twitchit had appeared in a previously published story, The Tale of the Pie and the Patty-Pan, in which she was a shop keeper. The illustrations included her kittens playing.

Released on 31st July 2017, the 2017 Tom Kitten 50p coin is one of the Beatrix Potter coins that were minted between 2016 and 2018. Once upon a time there were three little kittens. Their names were Mittens, Tom Kitten, and Moppet. The 2017 Tom Kitten is the rarest Potter coin minted in that year, with 9.5 million produced. This puts it marginally ahead of the 2017 Jeremy Fisher 50p (9.9 million) but well in front of the far more common 2017 Tale of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny 50p coins, with a mintage of 19.9 million and 25 million respectively. One day, Mrs Tabitha had friends coming to tea and wanted to show off her little kittens. ‘You are to wear your nest clothes,’ she told them as they sat in a row in front of her. ‘And you must be on your best behaviour.’ The coin sits roughly in the middle of the Beatrix Potter series in terms of rarity. For the next year’s Potter series, the Royal Mint decided on minting far less of each design, with The Tailor of Gloucester 50p being the least rare at 3.9 million.

Potter was born into an upper-middle-class family in Brompton, London. Both of her parents, Rupert and Helen, were keen artists and encouraged her to pursue her talents. little kittens are all dressed up by their mother to put up a good show before her friends. They got dressed well but started losing their clothes as soon as their mother stopped dressing them. In the end they had to put into bed before the friends arrive because they have lost all the clothes.

Two Girls and a Guy: The kittens consist of two female kittens (mollies) and one male kitten (tomcat). Odd Name Out: Tom is the only kitten with a human name, and without a two-syllable name or an "M" name. But one day their mother—Mrs. Tabitha Twitchit—expected friends to tea; so she fetched the kittens indoors, to wash and dress them, before the fine company arrived.
