About this deal

Plan ahead to eradicate a large group of rats in one night. To do so, select a bait area, such as a pile of grains, bark, or other natural areas where rats congregate. Then bait a large number of traps with peanut butter, and leave them unset in the area. Furthermore, poisoned bait increases the odds of a rat meeting its slow death in another part of the house. In that case, you could have difficulty locating its stinky, rotting corpse. It has a T-shape instead of a rectangular shape, so it may not be the best option to place under cabinets.

Your choices may be limited by where you intend to use your trap. When using a trap indoors, look for products that are said to be safe for pets and people and are tamper-proof. Glue and wood traps don't often fare well when exposed to the elements and lose effectiveness as a result. Most live traps, especially those made of metal, are designed exclusively for outdoor use. However, our Best Multi-Rat Trap option, the Rugged Ranch Ratinator Multiple Catch Live Rat Trap, is made of plastic and is designed to be used outdoors to trap rats and relocate them to another area. The house mouse averages 2.5 to 4 inches in length, with an additional length of equal measure for its tail. By contrast, the brown rat, also known as the Norway Rat, has a body that typically measures between 7 to 10 inches in length, with an additional 6 to 8 inches for its tail. With all things considered, rat traps need to be much larger than mouse traps. The trouble is, a lot of homeowners barely know the difference between rats and mice, let alone how to determine whether an infestation involves one or the other.

Wild rats can be highly aggressive when cornered: they won’t cower and run when confronted by humans, so the only effective way to rid yourself of them is either to catch and kill or catch and release far away from your property. Whichever method you choose, lethal or non-lethal, you’ll be pleased to know that the majority of rat-trapping methods lean towards more humane options these days. Best Rat Traps: At a glance Rats aren’t something you want to find in or around your home – unless they’re your pets. Uninvited rats can be difficult to deal with, particularly as most of the deterrents that work on mice have little effect on larger vermin, and once they’re in, they’re hard to get rid of.

Keep in mind that with this option, the body of the rat won’t be hidden after the trap is activated. Additionally, with wooden traps, smells can more easily be trapped in the material if it’s not properly cleaned. If you opt for catch and release, take the cage to an unoccupied, natural area of woods or fields, place the cage on the ground and release the trap’s door. The rat will see to the rest. Place the trap where you have seen signs of rat activity or along the wall where they primarily travel. Indoor use only. If you don’t have the heart to kill rats but understand all the reasons why you can’t have them as house guests, there’s a high-tech method for repelling the critters outright. With the Victor ®Ultra PestChaser ®, you can keep your house happily rodent–free without the use of traps. Key specs – Pest control method: Mechanical; Pest control type: Non-lethal; Usage: Indoor/outdoor; Bait included: N; Dimensions: 380x 170 high x 180mmRats are considered opportunistic omnivores, meaning they can eat whatever types of food are available,” Dr. Frye says. “The best bait is to use the food item that the rats are currently eating. For example, if rats are eating pet food left out overnight, or foraging in the candy bowl, or eating bread off the counter, then those are the baits to use first.” When considering the size of the trap, think about where you need to place the rat trap. If you plan on placing it between the floor and a cabinet, you’ll want to consider the dimensions so it can easily fit in the space. If your rat problems linger, repeat the plan as a whole: Bait unset traps for multiple days, and then bait and set the traps to hit the rat population again. Tip 14: Bigger Buildings Call for Bigger Operations

When rats invade a house, it’s likely because of a swelling rat population somewhere nearby. If they’ve invaded your house but not your neighbor’s, it’s only because your house is less secure. However, sealing the gaps and plugging the holes in your walls, roof, windows, and vents is just part of the battle. You also need to deny them useful paths to move around your property. However, Dr. Frye explains that a method called pre-baiting is more important than figuring out the bait. “Many, but not all rats are neophobic, which means they are afraid of new objects in their environment,” he says. “ To overcome this fear, you have to train the rat to recognize the device as something safe. This is done by providing lots of bait on the trap without setting the device.”Mixing poison with edible bait can cause numerous problems. For example, if a rat gets away with the bait and drags it across the floor, that poison could potentially spread through your flooring. This can be hazardous to any bare feet that cross over the area, especially if you have pets or children in the house.

We love how easy it is to set this trap: Simply release the arm bar to set the trap, and place it in an area where the rat will scurry along. Made in the USA, this trap is also constructed from responsibly sourced materials. Additionally, rats aren’t just unsettling house guests—they can pose quite a few problems for homeowners. “Rats will gnaw to expand openings and to probe objects in their environment,” Dr. Frye says. “Consequently, it’s estimated that between 20–25% of fires where the cause was not determined are due to rodents chewing on wires or gas lines in walls.”

Tip 12: Don’t Trap ‘Em — Zap ‘Em

Use the right bait, and this is potentially a cheap and easy way to round up the majority if not all of your rat problem in one fell swoop, prior to releasing them somewhere more suitable in the wild.
