About this deal

Martin Lewis: What the Autumn Statement means for you – including wages, benefits, pensions, ISAs, housing, national insurance and more Airers that retract, collapse, or fold up will naturally save space. Anything that doesn’t fold up may get in the way when not in use, especially if installed in a narrower alley alongside the house. Great Space Saving Item I bought this Barbantia wallfix washing line, as the Housing Association who manage my flat refused to replace the ones installed for tenants use.

So in terms of use you have to say this basically matches right up to the Minky. I can’t actually find a difference with them other than the Minky is a few quid cheaper. So I’d still take the Minky in terms of price, but I think they are both equally as heavy duty.

Before buying the Brabantia WallFix 25M (375842)

Don’t get tripped up on install – there’s every chance you won’t be happy with the fixings provided. Whilst I appreciate many have done just fine, I really don’t think the fixings they give you work well at all for wooden structures. As I allude to in my Vileda Automatic Retractable Clothes Line review, you will want to get some decent wood screws – anything over 40mm will do you just fine. For concrete I think the fixing kits are just about OK – you’ll need a 6 or 7mm SDS bit from all of the kits that I tested in this review. Worth knowing as you’ll be pulling your hair out if you don’t have one! Build quality And I was particularly happy with the Vinsani and especially the budget Metaltex if the Vileda single washing line isn’t enough. We found that to be a very good alternative to the top heavy duty Minky: Vinsani retractable washing line held up very well in testing Always one of the most important factors is price, and the amount you are willing to pay for your retractable washing line will probably affect the overall quality of the product. For example, if you want a near indestructible washing line like the Brabantia Wallfix, you’re going to have to shell out a lot more than you would for the Beldray washing line. Make sure that you’re comfortable and safe with using the tools required to do this, and always get a professional to help if not. The first question that you need to ask yourself is- where do I intend to use my retractable washing line? Is it for setting up in the bathroom to pop towels over? To set up in the garden like a traditional washing line? Or maybe you want something that you can take camping with you?

Wall-mounted washing lines can be mounted inside or outside the home and once your washing is dry, the lines on many models can be folded away, freeing up space for more important things. If you don’t have a lot of room, you need to consider how much space the extended line will take up, as well as the type of washing you want to hang out. Often a compromise can be made by hanging larger items, like sheets and towels, elsewhere – on an airer or over banisters. Vileda Cordomatic 15 Metre Automatic Retractable Clothes Line – fixing kit didn’t feel strong enough We do not recommend cementing the main rotary washing line pole into the ground as you’ll want to be able to store it away over winter and easily replace the line if it becomes damaged. Where Do I Put My Rotary Washing Line?

Brabantia WallFix 25M

One downside of this line is that it’s not very stable in strong winds. Due to its aluminium construction, the arms can bend if they are overloaded and/or subjected to other forces – such as wind. Because of this, it’s best not to use this line if there is more than a slight breeze. As a cheaper option, it doesn’t have the same quality as the Brabantia wall mounted line, but then again it doesn’t have the high price tag either. It can support approximately 8 kg of washing, which is approximately one small load. It may be able to withstand slightly more if the items are small and evenly distributed. TOP TIP FROM EXPERIENCE: Bin the screws and wall plugs that come with these units and use decent brown 7mm standard wall plugs and a decent 4.5 size (gauge) screw that is at least 40mm long. Almost all the kits I tested were adequate but didn’t fill me with confidence, not with a 10-15kg of wet washing getting thrown about in heavy wind!

The instructions are basic, but there are plenty of clear diagrams with accurate measurements on them to help you get set up without too many issues. All you need to do is work out the height you want the washing line, drill four holes accurately, then drive in the bolts. It’s pretty much as simple as that! The nylon rope itself is nice and strong and can support a fair amount of weight. We didn’t test it to the maximum 45lbs, but it held up well with a couple of towels, some wet shorts, and a few t-shirts while being hooked up between a couple of trees.

Multiple lines can be very handy if you’re short on space. Let’s say you have a small garden, or maybe even just a balcony or small spare room to utilise- multiple, parallel, washing lines can help you make the most of your available space. Now I know we get to set the tension ourselves but I can’t pull it anymore taunt than that and also fully loaded the line does stretch a bit. It’s not bad though and when compared to it’s direct competitors it’s pretty much inline with their washing line quality. If you are a one or two-person household, look for a wall mounted line with a weight capacity of at least 8 kg . This equates to roughly one load of washing. To hold more than one load, or heavier items like towels, look for a weight capacity closer to 20 kg . Extra hanger hooks - With a big drying space, this dryer can be used for your delicates too with small hooks in place.
