About this deal

Familiarise yourself with the heat gun before starting. Test it out on some scrap wood to get a feel for it. Safety is paramount, so wear goggles, gloves, and a face mask. Toxic fumes can overpower you and cause damage to your eyes, nose and throat if inhaled. Your workspace needs to be dust and dirt free, otherwise it can collect on the surface of the wood and the freshly applied varnish, spoiling the sheen and smooth finish.

From experience, little varnish spots always get missed, so have some 220-grit sandpaper handy to remove them. A standard 2×4 wood is a light wood with dark knots. A whitewash will give it a white look, making the knots darker. Simple White and Antique white will give subtle whites that tone down the yellowness. However, if you're looking for full coverage, consider using paint. White Stain Vs. White Paint Primarily for interior use, white wood oils are an excellentall-round solution. They’re easy to use, durable and can be used to create a huge range ofstunningeffects. This white wood stain creates cool, fresh white tones, seen in abundance at Chelsea this year. Brightening shady corners, white fences and planters are a natural partner for green foliage.

Polyurethane is a plastic in liquid form. It comes as either a water based varnish or an oil based varnish, anything from satin varnish to high gloss and absolute matt. The Some shellac and lacquer varnishes are solvent-based, which means you can use white spirit to remove them.

Shellac – This is not strictly a varnish, and is the main ingredient for French Polish for furniture. It is secreted by a beetle in South East Asia and usually bought in flakes which are diluted with alcohol before use. The ‘de-waxed’ version of shellac, which has under gone a process to have most of the waxy substances removed, can be used as a primer for other varnishes, such as Polyurethane and Acrylic which do not penetrate well into the wood. Shellac can be clear, or there are a range of shades Simply White and Antique White are almost exact dupes for each other and could easily be used interchangeably! White Stains on each type of wood Spray on varnishes are easy to use. They do not require brushes and they do not need to be thinned. They must be used in a well-ventilated area, however, as they have strong fumes, which might make you feel lightheaded or nauseous. Manns Extra Tough Floor Varnish for floors and staircases. If you’re looking for a strong, general purpose, water-based varnish that can be used for almost any project, Solvent strippers are more toxic, restricting how and where you can use them. They’re the most harmful to your eyes, nose and throat.Simply White and Antique white are very subtle whites that just tone down the yellowyness. White stain vs. white paint The nature of a wood stain is to allow some of the grain and colour of the timber to show through. So from a white wash to a solid opaque finish if you are painting over other colours or dark timber it may take a few coats to get the effect you are looking for. If you want it to really look white, white wash it, but the knots will still be very pronounced! Pine When applying stripper, there is always an element of patience. You need to allow the chemicals to penetrate and break down the varnish. Caustic strippers are the most effective at removing deep layers of varnish, which is ideal for old furniture and wooden fittings. They also produce fewer fumes, making them better for indoor use. However, caustic strippers burn skin, so wear gloves and goggles.

We love to see before, during and after photos of any wood finishing project. If you would like to share your project pictures with us and our followers, you can either send us some photos or share on our Primer and undercoat adhere well to wood and will provide a longer-lasting finish, but emulsion helps create the distressed look well. White wash gives it a white look while still letting the knots appear dark. If you want fuller coverage, you will want to paint.

How do I prepare the wood for oiling?

To get the best whitewash effect you need to ask yourself how long does paint take to dry for the paint you are using. Even though whitewash is watered down paint, the drying time should be very similar. Allow it to rest for about five minutes or more, especially for oil-based stains, then use a clean cloth to wipe off the excess.
