About this deal

I’m curious about the performance of the i7-1260P + RTX 2050 version of the Gram 17. That entry-level RTX 2050 should be 2x the performance of the Iris chip if supplied with enough power, and I’d expect LG to implement a superior thermal design on that model which should also benefit the CPU in sustained loads. That’s a topic for another article, though. It’s not the regular matte finish available on ThinkPad or ZenBooks, but rather a balanced anti-glare finish that cuts out most of the reflections and doesn’t add noticeable graininess, a middle-ground implementation that I found excellent during my time with this laptop. In the past, LG offered glossy screens on their Grams, so this is a much-welcomed change. ACCURATE COLOURS] - The LG gram +view accurately represents your creative ideas and the colours you intended, delivering WQXGA (2560 x 1600) High Resolution and DCI-P3 99% (Typ.) supporting a wide ranging Colour gamut with an Anti-glare panel. The 16:10 Large professional Screen (which can be further extended to a 32:10 display when connected with 16 inch LG gram for full immersion to boost your productivity)

The only fly in the ointment is the rather high price. Otherwise, LG really has done a very, very good job of building a proper large-screen, lightweight laptop with decent performance, a full-sized keyboard, a great sound system and a generous selection of ports. It’s an achievement too easy to get blasé about. Finally, if you were looking for a touchscreen on this Gram 17, there isn’t any in this 2022 generation. You will find touch variants of the smaller Gram 15 and Gram 16 models, in their 2-in-1 convertible variants. Hardware, performance, and upgrade optionsLG offers this in a few different configurations, some based entirely on an Intel 12th-gen Core P platform with Iris Xe graphics and an 80 Wh battery, well suited for daily activities and multitasking, and a few that pair the same Core P processors with an RTX 2050 dGPU and a 90 Wh battery, for those looking for a little more performance in this format. These are sold as the LG Gram 17 Pro in some markets, but the former Gram 17 variant is the one we’re discussing here. Here’s what we got on our unit, compared to the Gram 17, previous-gen Gram 16, and a few other portable models. Low settings On High, we’re looking at 15-22W of power with fan noise around 37-38dB and CPU temperatures in the mid-70s and to mid-80s C. As far as the competition goes, there’s the Gram 17 already mentioned, and the Acer Swift Edge, another lightweight 16-inch laptop. That’s built on AMD Ryzen U hardware, which I know some of you will love, but it’s also a low-power design with minimalist cooling, and it gets a 4K OLED screen and a 56 Wh battery. You’ll find all about it in our review. BTW, there’s also an OLED available in the updated 2023 LG Gram, though. Our test version is the standard configuration of the 2022 LG Gram 16 16Z90Q, with an Intel 12th-gen Alder Lake Core i7-1260P processor + Iris Xe embedded graphics, 16 GB of LPDDR5-5200 memory, and a fast 512 GB SSD.

Samsung’s Galaxy Book2 Pro offers some direct competition thanks to an even more impressive all-up weight of just 1.1kg. Even the Galaxy Book2 Pro 360, which is the fully convertible version, only weighs 1.4kg in 15.6in form. At the same time, it only offers the performance of a smaller ultrabook, and is in fact outmatched by many of these modern 13 and 14-inch units, mostly because LG use a common internal design between all their Grams, thus the space in this 16-inch chassis is not fully utilized. In other words, that means this Gram 16 is mostly suited for daily tasks and multitasking, but not for serious workloads or for gaming. There’s a high-resolution 16-inch 16:10 screen on the LG Gram 16, with narrow side bezels and an average chin and forehead. For the 2022 models, LG also implement a matte-finished display, with a good-quality IPS panel. Audio is handled by a set of stereo speakers that fire through grills placed on the underside. They can be easily covered while using the laptop on the lap, so keep that in mind. These results are comparable to the Gram 17 platform, within 5-10% lower in some CPU/GPU tests. Puget benchmarks are a little skewed because Adobe have updated their software suite between tests. They always fall short for their price tag, still with underwhelming specs that truly matter on a portable-first device, still sacrifice too much performance and heat dissipation and require 2000€ or more for the bare minimum RAM (32GB) and SSD (1TB) required for productive work. This change of mind return policy is in addition to, and does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law including any rights you may have in respect of faulty items. To return faulty items see our Returning Faulty Items policy. It’s still ludicrously light and portable for a 17in laptop, but this year’s version has better battery life, improved connectivity and faster performance. If you hanker after something that works just as well as a mobile workhorse as it does a desktop replacement, it’s pretty much the perfect solution. The Keyboard is not ISO standard - yes the keys are layed out for a UK audience but instead of the L shaped Enter Key they have the american style horizontal "Enter" and the "#"/"~" key is moved above "Enter". As a programmer this still throws me from time to time and it baffles me that they'd have an American enter key but not an American "Left SHIFT". So it's a half US and half UK layout where we have a UK key placements as well as "Left SHIFT" and "\" living next to one another (as the Queen intended) but we have an American "ENTER" key with the "#" key moved up... WEIRD.

Not only that, but the increased efficiency of the 11th gen CPU also helps out when it comes to working on the move. With the same 80Wh capacity battery in place as in last year’s laptop, the 2021 LG Gram 17 lasted a whopping 13hrs 24mins. That’s around two-and-a-half-hours longer. It also supports IR with Hello and is flanked by some decent microphones. Be careful that the camera might be disabled by default, and you’ll need to press Fn + F4 to deactivate Secure Mode for it to work (or enable it in the control app). Battery life

Our review unit is the Intel Core i7-1260P + Iris Xe variant of the Gram 16 16Z90Q, but LG also offer a Gram 16 Pro model with RTX 2050 graphics and some slight internal changes, which we’ll discuss perhaps in a future article.
