About this deal

My favorite character is Moa, because of his strong belief in the uprising. However, I like all of the characters that took part in the uprising, because they worked together strongly, and they never gave up, even when continuing to fight would have been their death. The book contains graphic descriptions of violence and brutality throughout, so this is one best for older children aged thirteen and up. Terrific. A pacy, provocative ode to an important part of Jamaican history from one of our most versatile, trailblazing authors.’ Irenosen Okojie Sales Wed 25 October 7-8pm - Alex Wheatle, Michael Joseph & Steve Marshall: “State of Trust’s interpretation of Cane Warriors for dance-theatre ”– Booking Link For survival situations - metal cane is the way to go. Besides being a self-defense tool, it will also function as an improvised crowbar. I'd rather have you strike one power shot at your opponent than sit there beating him down.

In Alex Wheatle’s young adult book Cane Warriors we meet fourteen year old Moa who is enslaved on the Frontier sugar cane plantation. He is in the middle of harvest season, he hasn’t seen his mother in over two months because she is serving in the Enslaver’s house and his father also is kept working for long and exhausting hours. With the recent death of a plantation beloved woman Moa starts considering what freedom would feel like. Dapo Adeola, Tracy Darnton, Joseph Coelho and Chitra Soundar are among the 19 authors and illustrators longlisted for the Inclusive Books for Child...

Alex Wheatle's prose is what truly drew me into this story, it is beautifully written, and hard to put down. This is a story that needs to be told. This is history that must not be forgotten. The fight against injustice must continue! This led to a short film about the young Alex being filmed in November 2019. This is due to be aired this year. Hidden in plain sight, your cane is a potential weapon that you can bring with you anywhere you go. Moving forward, I hope many of my talented peers decide to create and place young adult characters in historical situations. We need to remind society that young people lived and suffered through these harrowing events too, and perhaps we can all try to aspire to live in a world where a young person is not exposed to so much cruelty, violence and inhumanity.

Final note - metal canes are better for bigger people. a wooden cane might bend under you if you're on the heavy side. Alex Wheatle is a master storyteller. He writes with urgency, passion and the empathy we all need to wrestle with the realities of transatlantic slavery, bringing marginalised narratives straight out of the shadows, right into the frame. Every kid in the country needs to read this book.’ Jeffrey Boakye But hey - if you are into walking cane self-defense... you'll need that forearm strength anyway. I'd see it as a training opportunity. Plus, once you get used to the Ka-Bar, any wooden cane will feel like a feather. The characters were great! You really sympathise with the main character after what she's been through - growing up on a plantation, working all day and being beaten constantly. It really was an eye-opener, especially since I had never heard ANY of this - I didn't even know this was a thing before reading it! ARC Angel Stun Cane - Best electric self-defense cane (great for seniors & beginners, no training required)Personally - I like to know that I'm holding something that won't break - no matter what I do with it. 3. The Shaft Of The Cane Alex Wheatle writes from a place of honesty and passion with the full knowledge and understanding that change can only happen through words and actions’ Steve McQueen (director 12 Years a Slave) Q: Belief, music and culture features throughout Cane Warriors, as the newly-liberated people are for a time free to sing, live and worship their gods as their ancestors in West Africa did. What inspired the music, beliefs and stories that feature in this book? I didn’t have much understanding of this era but I can see why slavery has such a bearing on modern day life. I would recommend this book as the story is thought provoking, but it was difficult to read as it uses such speech that would have been used at the time. It's possible to learn the basics of using a cane for self-defense by yourself. Here are two books that'll get you started (we recommend you get both, they're worth it):

Giving voice to characters seldom heard in British children’s books, this is an important, powerful novel about hope, freedom and brotherhood.' The Observer - Young adult books round up review His mother, a cook in the main house, lives in terror of abuse from the lady of the house, for the tiniest of errors. His father suffered a life-changing work accident, but still has to labour in the same place, where his blood still stains the machinery that he uses every day. Cane Warriors shines a light on a particularly dark period of history whose effects can still be felt today. A powerful, important book that is destined to become a modern classic. One night one of the men who works with Moa comes to him and explains that the slaves have had enough and on Easter Monday when there are not so many people around they are going to kill the white owners and leave this inhospitable life behind. Moa has been given the task of killing Misser Donaldson, but is he capable of such an act, and what will happen to him and his family when the owners are dead?
