Prym’s mini steam iron is sold as a craft or travel iron, and we agree that it is superbly well suited to those purposes. If you only tend to iron small quantities of clothes at once, you might also consider it as your go-to for day-to-day ironing. It comes with a drawstring pouch, too. It's so speedy to get to the right temperature and has the kind of continuous steam ability to make a huge pile of washing more manageable. Technically it has a 150g steam burst and vertical steam, which basically just means it has precise ironing ability when you need it. is about executing the plan and delivering excellent products to as many customers as possible. We expect our retail base to grow significantly from the current 81 stores in the UK and Ireland which sell our products. We also expect the international side of our business to start in 2022, with the USA and Canada, the UAE and Australia and New Zealand likely to be the first international territories for our products. In essence, this investment over 5 years has allowed us to bring our three core products to market: the Funky Iron (December 2018) and the Funky Kettle and Funky Toaster (January 2021). The life of a steam iron reviewer is not an easy one. Derek Adams and our other iron specialists have no other way to test irons than to use them at home. As a result, our reviewers are always very crisply turned out, but a bit bored of ironing. Good thing we pay them such a princely sum for their efforts! My experience of this having gone through multiple rounds of investment on crowdfunding platforms, with angel investors and with hedge funds, is that you need to listen to what your gut feel tells you about an investment opportunity and the people behind it. If you have the slightest doubt about whether to do a deal or not, don’t do it. You need to be 100 per cent certain that it makes sense and that you are happy with it. Crowdfunding gives you the perfect tool to raise important capital and bring in an army of people who want you to do well, without any one or two investors wanting to then take over the business and run it. Again, my experience in the past is that you can only have one boss making the final decision and running the business. If there are too many chefs, it won’t work. But it’s not perfect. The glide isn’t great and we weren’t so impressed with the steam and controls. Steam is on (25g/min) or off, there’s no adjustment. While under your thumb are buttons for water spray and steam boost (115g/min) which can be used vertically. But these are quite hard to squeeze, nowhere near as ergonomic as the rest of the Tefal. The only other button is for the anti-calc mode. The Funky Iron has a lifelong anti-scale system built into it. It also has water spray and self-clean buttons. A complimentary heat-resistant silicone pad is included to rest your iron on your ironing board. Be sure you are scaling for the right reason. If you are diversifying into other areas and verticals, make sure you know why you are doing that, and what challenges that will bring. If you have found a winning product and a winning formula to push the product successfully out there into the market, you will know whether scaling the spend behind that makes sense. We have only been trading for 12 weeks, so in business terms, we are very young, although the company was formed in June 2016. The design process itself was a long process which started with a blank piece of paper in May 2016 and ended with our first manufacturing run in October 2018. The last 12 months of product design, development and refinement demanded great patience and required everyone involved to stay very focused on the end target, which was to produce a beautiful looking steam iron which also ironed beautifully. Happily, everyone involved in the project, both here and in China stepped up and in December 2018, The Good Housekeeping Institute gave our new Funky Iron the status of “Good Housekeeping Institute Approved 2019”, citing that the Funky Iron had met the rigorous standards and performed really strongly. Yes, you read right, cordless. After around 30 seconds of ironing, the base beeps to remind you to recharge. Then it takes 11 seconds to recharge – just enough time for you to adjust the garment to a new position. The timings work. As do the ergonomics: it slides comfortably onto the base and ironing cordlessly feels very natural.
