About this deal

In many ways, we think the Fujifilm Instax SQ40 is everything that an instant camera should be. For starters, its old-school design is both stylish and easy to use. The body is relatively chunky, but it features a small contour on the rear that we found makes it easier to hold than the Mini 12. The Polaroid SX-70 is another vintage model, and was the world's first instant SLR camera. Like Polaroid 600s, they are no longer manufactured –though they are still hugely popular on the second-hand market, and Polaroid itself even sells refurbished bodies (as do other refurb specialists). The textured finish gives it retro appeal and also makes it easier to get a firm grip, which is good as the Instax 40 is slightly heavier than its cheaper sibling. While it feels like a solid unit, the Instax 40 has the same sort of pull-out lens, which still feels a little flimsy, especially when the lens is pulled out fully to activate selfie mode. On March 22, 2010, it was announced they were successful in manufacturing instant film compatible with Polaroid SX-70/600 instant cameras. Two new products were announced — PX100 and PX600. Their PX100 Silver Shade instant film is a manipulable, monochromatic replacement of old Polaroid brand instant film compatible with SX-70 cameras while the PX600 Silver Shade instant film is compatible with 600 cameras. [ citation needed] That formulation has since been supplanted by improved films. Build quality could be better but this is an excellent instant camera for youngsters or for parties where you don’t want to risk a pricier camera falling into the hands of a sozzled snapper.

If you've got an itch to shoot film again and don't want to have to find a local lab to develop your shots, instant film is a good alternative. It delivers results that almost match digital in their immediacy. The newest instant format from Fujifilm, introduced in 2018, Instax Square film is larger than Mini and carries a 1:1 aspect ratio more like the classic shape of Polaroid film. It is available in color and monochrome, with a selection of colored and patterned frame options. It seems a lot simpler than other hybrid cameras, but built-in Bluetooth support lets it perform double duty as a portable printer. Being able to turn your smartphone snaps into physical prints gives it an edge over bulkier instant cameras, and it's sensibly priced too. Instax film tends to produce pastel-like colors and soft-focus details, giving your photos that unmistakable instant feel, though they tend to be more true-to-life than rivals including Polaroid or Lomography.

Because it develops photos, rather than printing them like an inkjet, each one has the signature contrast-heavy and colorful style we expect from instant film. You'll have to wait a minute or two between pressing print on your phone and the final image appearing in your hands, but that's all part of the charm of instant film. Not suitable for: Instax Mini cameras, Lomo'Instant & Lomo'Instant Automat cameras, Instax Square cameras, Diana Instant Square, Lomo'Instant Square Glass It's the simplicity of the best instant cameras that makes them so appealing. After all, they're so straightforward that they make some of the best cameras for kids as well as the best cameras for beginners. ACE series ISO 800 films. Compatible with Fujifilm's Fotorama ACE series of instant cameras. Discontinued June 2010.
