Cinderella's magnificent castle has achieved extraordinary renown since 1971 and this design appears immediately recognisable. However, I think the beautiful colours are more important in achieving fantastic display value, with pearl gold and differing shades of blue complementing these white and light bluish grey walls. While its normal colour scheme has remained fairly consistent since 1971, Cinderella Castle is periodically decorated to celebrate certain occasions. That sometimes involves golden accents, although this concentration of pearl gold appears unusual. Nevertheless, I think the colours are attractive here, beginning across the bridge and continuing under the archway where the raised portcullis is visible.

That’s because when you’re building at this scale, there’s not a whole lot of room to manoeuvre around the LEGO part palette. But there is a whole lot of room to get creative, and that’s exactly what the designers behind 40478 Mini Disney Castle have done to realise this symbol of Walt Disney World at a fraction of the size of 71040 The Disney Castle. For those on a budget or those short on space, this set is just perfect, and I think in many ways, is superior to the big Disney Castle. For context, I own the large Disney Castle but it’s still in the box because I don’t have the space.

Technic gears represent superb machicolations beneath the projecting sections of each tower, while the roofs include an interesting trans-opalescent blue shade. I have not encountered the colour before and the three elements present here are new in trans-opalescent blue. Moreover, the arrangement of separate towers corresponds with the source material. Whether you’re after a companion to 71040 The Disney Castle, don’t have the room or budget for that mainstay of the LEGO Disney line-up, or just want to revel in a microscale build that embraces the artistic and technical challenges of building so small, 40478 Mini Disney Castle feels like an easy recommendation. There are some fiddly bits as you’re building mostly with small elements, but I did enjoy the techniques that made this unique shape possible. Highly recommend this set, and this is pretty much a flawless set, and contender for one of the best and most satisfying sets of 2021. An obvious 5/5 score for this miniature magical wonder.
