About this deal

Paper is not only a means to convey information or images, but is also used as a medium in architecture, jewelry making, crafts, and even fashion. Hiebert’s well organized manual shows (both in written directions and pictures!) how cutting, folding, twisting, weaving, crumpling, and even tearing can turn a single sheet into unbelievable forms. She starts with paper sources, including how to make your own. The Art of Papercraft" is wonderful if you're looking for new ideas and inspiration about what you can do with paper. While Helen Hiebert is the one who put the book together, the projects inside were created by many artists worldwide, ranging from young voices to established professionals, each of them introducing a project created using their preferred techniques. From the introduction: “Helen Hiebert is a seasoned author artist, papermaker, and teacher who has created a comprehensive exploration of paper arts in The Art of Papercraft. This book will prove to be an excellent resource for teachers and students alike… All of the projects are fun one-sheet wonders that introduce essential cutting, folding and assembly techniques. Each project is simple enough for beginners while being sufficiently sophisticated for the seasoned crafter.”

I've engaged in papercrafts my whole life and have tried most of the techniques described, but even so there were a few new ones for me (eg studs, fasteners and eyelets). I skimmed through some parts and examined others in detail. The section on bendable paper using wire supports was very interesting, and who can't resist pop-ups and origami?

Some projects are very simple and beginner-friendly, while others require much more patience and careful work. Some look highly impressive, while others aren't likely to wow. This can be a bit frustrating both if you want an accessible book for kids, and if you have experience in a particular area and you're looking for projects beyond the basics. Likewise, if you want to explore one area of papercraft in depth, you're likely to be disappointed. The projects were beautifully illustrated by the work of an artist, and it was lovely to see what can be achieved in the hands of an expert. However I thought that some of the projects went from ridiculously easy (a name card? seriously?) to much more difficult, with not much at the intermediary level. The complimentary copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley free of charge. I was under no obligation to offer a positive review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Maybe I like these children’s art books because my grandchildren are perfect for discovering the art world. Or, it could be that I am a perpetual child who loves the elementary joy of creating art with pencil and paper. Whichever it is, this time-munching book is the perfect anecdote to a miserably hot afternoon that keeps our inner artists cooped up in an air-conditioned room. It’s like viewing a watercolor painting on a piece of paper or an intricate modern art sculpture you could squash with two hands. Even if you are not a paper nut, which I am not, this book is worth considering. Sometimes, we all need a new passion, right? Created by various designers, the one-sheet projects shown in the book are broadly categorised under folding, cutting and construction. Once past this list, there are 11 examples of how to use embellishments on the surface of a paper, such as fasteners, slip-on sleeves or a cut to fold into.

When I started reading the section with projects, I was a little wary at the simplicity of them. However, the book showcases a nice progression of projects. They are organized by different papercraft techniques, and progress from easy to more and more difficult. The photo and text instructions are well laid out and fun to follow, and there are over forty projects to try out. The construction chapter is where it gets more involved with the adding of adhesives, embroidery, electronics, and more. There are twenty-two projects in this section, again with photographic and written instructions. Next up, Invitation to Draw: 99 Drawing Prompts Designed to Inspire Kids’ Creativity by Jean Van’t Hul is a Roost Books title that is grandchild approved. If you’ve been following my social media channels it shouldn’t be a surprise why I read this book. Always on the hunt for new crafting techniques, I loved how the author presents the art of crafting with paper to the reader.I enjoyed perusing through her ideas, carefully looking at the photographs and directions. Some I’ve tried before, some don’t interest me, but some I am excited to try. Artistry is about possibility and this book is full of possibility. This isn't necessarily a bug, so much as it might be an intentional feature: there's something here for everyone, which means there likely aren't too many people who are interested in everything the book has to offer.
