Autumn Amethyst is a reblooming azalea that will provide you with pretty purple flowers sporadically from spring through fall. These lavender flowers are single flowers and have dark purple spots on the upper petals. Each of those flowers can grow up to 3 inches in diameter. The foliage is a beautiful green color with hints of copper and red. The leaves will drop in the fall, but the form of the royal azalea is beautiful and will not take away from your winter gardens. Growing up to 7 feet tall, electric lights double pink makes quite the statement in your gardens. The deciduous leaves will turn to burgundy in the fall before dropping for the season. Exbury Strain Because azaleas have been selectively bred for centuries, there are thousands of cultivars, derived from hundreds of species found throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Many of the crucial parent species are natives of western China. Extensive hybridization means that new varieties appear every year, including many that are now suitable for northern climates. Fungicide – Fungicides can help control powdery mildew, but prevention is the key. Avoid overhead watering and keep the area surrounding the plant free of debris.

The Difference Between Azaleas and Rhododendrons

There are over 800 species of azaleas with more than 10,000 different types. Unlike rhododendrons, azalea shrubs don’t grow as tall as their larger cousins. This makes them a perfect choice for any type of garden, large or small. In fact, some azalea plants are beautiful flowering dwarf cultivars that grow well in containers. Most gardeners find that azaleas are one of the easiest shrubs to grow. If you are not sure about the acidity of the soil in your garden, you can get a soil test kit from a reputable garden center or do a pH test using a simple garden soil pH meter. If the soil is too alkaline, you can make it acidic by adding composted leaves, pine needles, or sulfur. Ensure that you work the materials into the soil thoroughly. Azaleas are prized in Japan and have been so since hundreds of years ago when gardeners cultivated them for Imperial gardens. This group is very attractive for blooming twice, once in spring and then again, usually more profusely, in autumn. Another technique is called “thinning,” which involves removing some of the larger, older branches to increase airflow and sunlight penetration. Thinning should be done after the plant has finished blooming in the late spring or early summer. Fertilization is a vital aspect of promoting healthy growth and blooming in Double Purple Azaleas. These plants are acid-loving and require a fertilizer with a high level of acidity. It is recommended to use a slow-release, organic fertilizer specifically formulated for azaleas and rhododendrons, as these plants are in the same family.
