This book is intense as it is fun! To see how Rapp and company handle this situation just shows that no matter what, whether it be a Lethal Agent (bioweapon) or a national power outage, they can still get the job done and save us all once again! I knew going in that the newer entries into the series by Kyle Mills have been kind of up and down for me. I really liked last year's Lethal Agent, but I thought Red War was maybe the weakest in the series. Total Power is somewhere in between. While its parent company is known for its work in the oil and gas industry, Total Gas and Power has pledged to commit to becoming carbon net-zero by 2050 and seems to be making steps in the right direction with its increasingly renewable fuel mix and eco-energy products. Nonetheless, it still has some way to go to catch up with 100% renewable business electricity suppliers such as Pozitive Energy and British Gas Lite. We selected a sample of spectra obtained from the Institut de Radio-Astronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) 30-m telescope and the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) to test the feasibility of the method. Given that modern front-end amplifiers for the GBT and direct Local Oscillator injection for the 30 m telescope provide smooth pass bands that are a few tens of megahertz in width, the spectra from standard observations can be cleaned (baseline removal) separately and then co-added directly when the lines are narrow enough (a few km s −1), instead of performing the traditional ON minus OFF data reduction. This technique works for frequency-switched observations as well as for position- and beam-switched observations when the ON and OFF data are saved separately. Each year I wait like a kid for Christmas for the new Mitch Rapp book. Once I have it, I’m of two minds: Do I rush through it, or do I savor it, like a fine wine, enjoying it in small sips. This year I was determined to take my time with Total Power, and I did for three days until I reached the point of I-can’t-put-this-down. So I stayed up until 4 a.m. because I had to finish the book. I’m not proud for yielding to my weaker self, but I am glad I did.

This book is frighteningly real in concept, and according to some experts, could be a real-life scenario. I have a hard time if we lose power for a day or two. I can't imagine what it would be like to have it down for a year or more. Makes me want to watch a couple of those "prepper" shows.

In the end, my investigation into this scenario was every bit as terrifying as the coronavirus research I did for Lethal Agent.
