SOUTH Western Railway (SWR) has today launched the UK’s first ever Intersex-Inclusive Pride train to show support for and solidarity with itsLGBTQIA+customers and colleagues and the community at large.
It’s worth emphasising that the whistle is not the signal – instead it draws attention to the signal, which is either the baton, the flag, or the raised hand(s). The signal can also be to stop the train rather than to start it – this can happen if the Guard or platform staff spot something wrong after the train has been started. The stop signal would be a red flag or lamp, *both* arms raised, or an object (possibly the baton) or lamp waved vigorously. On trains with internal communication bells or buzzers, two beats is to start, one beat to stop. Under route signalling, a driver is informed which route the train will take beyond each signal (unless only one route is possible). This is achieved by a route indicator attached to the signal. The driver uses their route knowledge, reinforced by speed restriction signs fixed at the lineside, to drive the train at the correct speed for the route to be taken. This method has the disadvantage that the driver may be unfamiliar with the required speed over a junction onto which they have been diverted due to some emergency condition. Several accidents have been caused by this alone. Bardics look like old-fashioned torches, and have the special feature of selectable coloured filters. They can therefore be used to display white, red or green lights as required. Avanti West Coast is launching the UK’s first fully wrapped Pride train entirely staffed by an LGBTQ+ crew for its first official service.
RDG used the same voltage and frequency as PRR and their cars were compatible with PRR’s electrification with the possible exception of high and low wire, and the definite exception of phase breaks. RDG drew its AC power from one source and its power was always in phase but PRR drew its power from multiple sources and there was a possibility one section could be out of phase with the next. A phase break was a short section of wire between power sources that was normally live but when the two ends were out of phase with each other, the “Phase Break” signal was lit and the section was dead. It is wonderful to have this train proudly flying the flag for equality on our network, furthering inclusion with the new Intersex-Inclusive flag design, and visibly showing our support forLGBTQIA+colleagues and customers.
